Bergen County has some of the best municipal websites in New Jersey. It also has others that are closer to the bottom of the heap in terms of content and user-friendliness, according to a recent statewide study.

The survey by Monmouth University ranked four Bergen County towns in the top 20. Franklin Lakes finished second out of 540 towns, followed by Fort Lee (10), Englewood (12), Glen Rock (18) and Bergenfield (20).

At the other end of the spectrum were Rockleigh (523), Moonachie (525), Harrington Park (529) and Alpine (530). Most Passaic County towns were in the middle of the pack, with Ringwood topping out with a ranking of 74.

Mary Therese Rose Crilly was born in 1998 with Joubert Syndrome a rare genetic disorder which left her profoundly disabled. Though physically limited, Mary’s limitless love and courage inspired those closest to her to establish a fund in her name to benefit special needs children
being treated out of the Kireker Center for Child Development. The Fund provides needed therapies and equipment that are so often denied by insurance companies because of lifetime insurance benefit limits or simple denial of reasonable claims.

Each year The Mary Therese Rose Fund helps families pay for needed equipment like orthotics, braces, and standers. It also funds activities such as horseback riding that are therapeutic and brighten the lives of these special kids. It is the goal of The Mary Therese Rose Fund to help
these special children reclaim some of the simple joys of childhood denied them by their

disabilities. Though Mary passed away in 2003 her brief life was filled with joy. In gratitude, and to honor her memory, supporters of the Mary Therese Rose Fund continue to work so that other special children can experience some of childhood’s simple joys as Mary did. For more information on the Mary Therese Rose Fund, go to www.marythereserose.org.

Your tax deductible contribution benefits local special needs kids through The Mary Therese Rose Fund. Reserve your tickets for this special event by calling Jack Crilly at 201-394-5940 or e-mailing jackcrilly@hotmail.com or Tara DuHaime at 973-703-4001 for further details.

Obamacare and the Medicaid Expansion: How Does Your State Fare?

New Jersey is a Net Payer

Drew Gonshorowski
March 5, 2013 at 1:28 pm

The Medicaid expansion is touted by proponents of Obamacare as a “no-brainer.” While it is true that some states may see projected savings, it is erroneous to claim that this experience applies to every state.

Proponents predict that by expanding Medicaid states will be able to reduce payments to health care providers, such as hospitals, for uncompensated care. As a matter of fact, nationally, the opposite is true:

40 of 50 states are projected to see increases in costs due to the Medicaid expansion.
The majority of states see costs exceed savings when the federal match rate is lowered after the first three years. From there, state costs continue to climb, dwarfing any projected savings.

State savings are concentrated in large states. New York is estimated to see $33 billion in savings, while Massachusetts is estimated to save $6 billion over 10 years. Because of the design of their current programs, these states have a unique opportunity to restructure their programs and transfer significant cost to the federal ledger. (continues below chart)

History of Easter

History of Easter

Easter, which celebrates Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, is Christianity’s most important holiday. It has been called a moveable feast because it doesn’t fall on a set date every year, as most holidays do. Instead, Christian churches in the West celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year. Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar to calculate when Easter will occur and typically celebrate the holiday a week or two after the Western churches, which follow the Gregorian calendar.

The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English. In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), the Jewish festival commemorating the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Pascha eventually came to mean Easter.

Easter is really an entire season of the Christian church year, as opposed to a single-day observance. Lent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday, is a time of reflection and penance and represents the 40 days that Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry, a time in which Christians believe he survived various temptations by the devil. The day before Lent, known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is a last hurrah of food and fun before the fasting begins. The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week and includes Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus’ last supper with his disciples; Good Friday, which honors the day of his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which focuses on the transition between the crucifixion and resurrection. The 50-day period following Easter Sunday is called Eastertide and includes a celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven.

Ridgewood has low inventory of homes for sale
March 29, 2013
By Michael Shetler

The Otteau Valuation Group has identified Ridgewood as one of the 127 areas in New Jersey with an inventory of homes for sale under six months.

A balanced market is considered to be an inventory of four to six months.

Ridgewood currently has a 4.2 month supply.

The Otteau Valuation Group is predicting a statewide increase in home values of at least 3% this year.

Rebound expected in N.J. home prices

After a six-year slide, New Jersey’s housing market appears to be at a turning point, with prices expected to rise this year.

As the market enters the traditionally lively spring selling season, a constellation of factors — more affordable prices, low mortgage rates and a recovering job market — is drawing more buyers. Inventories are tightening as sellers hang back, pointing to a rise in home prices for the first time since 2006.

This reversal was underscored Thursday by East Brunswick appraiser Jeffrey Otteau, who tracks real estate statewide. He predicted that an increase in buyer demand and a shrinking supply of homes will work together to push up prices 3 percent this year in New Jersey.

Christie tells beachfront owners to sign easement for dunes or face ridicule

Governor Christie put oceanfront property owners on notice Tuesday, saying those who don’t give the state permission to build sand dunes on their land will be named publicly.

“We’re going to start calling these folks out in the next few weeks if they haven’t signed the easements to let us build the dunes because they need to be called out and they need to be told that there is something more important than their own self interests,” he said during a town hall-style event in Middlesex Borough.

The threat is Christie’s latest attempt to persuade private property owners to permit the Army Corps of Engineers to build sand dunes on their land. Christie said superstorm Sandy wiped out any argument against dunes, because communities with engineered beaches suffered significantly less damage than those without.

“I’m not going to put up with people that decide their view of the Atlantic Ocean is more important than the lives and the properties of their neighbors,” he said.

Valley Caters to the Busy Woman with Health Screening Events on April 14 and 17

RIDGEWOOD, NJ – March 27 – On Sunday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 17, The Valley Hospital, in cooperation with its Spirit of Women health program, will offer “Done in a Day” to help busy women address those important health screenings that often go delayed or ignored due to scheduling difficulties. Women can choose one or more of six health screenings, which include digital breast imaging (mammography), bone density, women’s pelvic health, heart health assessment, spine screening, and a nutrition evaluation.

Mammography and bone density screenings require a physician’s prescription, and all screenings require appointments. Pelvic health, heart health, spine, and nutrition screenings are offered at no charge. All screenings are performed by nurse practitioners, certified radiology technicians, and other medical professionals. The schedule of screenings is as follows:

Sunday, April 14
7 a.m. – 9 a.m. Heart Health Assessment (requires fasting for 8-10 hours prior)
9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Mammography, Bone Density, Spine Screening

Wednesday, April 17
5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Mammography, Bone Density, Women’s Pelvic Health, Spine Screening, Nutrition Evaluation

Women may register for screening appointments by calling 1-800-VALLEY1 (1-800-825-5391). To allow for more than one health screening, our operators will work with women to schedule multiple appointments during the same visit. Some screenings are not available on both dates. You do not need to be a member of the Spirit of Women program to participate in these screenings.
