Hackensack NJ, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office ,yesterday at 10:07 AM “At approximately 9:30 PM on Friday, July 19th, the jail administration was notified that two air conditioner units had malfunctioned. Inmates/detainees were moved out the affected areas to a suitable environment. The units were evaluated and the air conditioning was restored soon thereafter. Random checks are being performed to monitor the jail’s climate.’

New York City’s defender organizations providing free legal representation through the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP) to detained immigrants with pending cases at the Varick Street Immigration Court  – released the following joint statement today in response to reports of continued air conditioning issues at the Bergen County Jail in New Jersey:

“We are alarmed by reports of continued air conditioning breakdowns at Bergen County Jail, especially as temperatures climb dangerously high this weekend. Bergen County Jail has a moral and legal obligation to ensure the safety of all individuals in its custody and their silence on this issue again raises concerns. NYIFUP demands immediate answers from jail officials on the scope of air conditioning outages and what exactly the jail is doing to protect our clients and others from heat-related illnesses
