Ridgewood NJ, Village attorney Matt Rogers  told the council the Village is not obligated to fly the “Rainbow or Gay flag”. Rogers talked at length of both legal and policy implications .Rogers went on to explain the “freedom of Speech ” issues as well as  the Village flag pole had not history been used to make a political statement or as a public forum . Temporary signs are also banned from Village public property  which would include the Village hall flag pole .

Mike Sedon chimed in that the American flag is inclusive and is the most potent symbol of inclusion world over. Both Bernie and Jeff were supportive of the Rainbow flag on the idea of “inclusiveness ” along the road that other groups  celebrate on Village property like the RBSA and so on. Councilmen Hache worried about other groups who may want to raise a flag that may not be supported by the community in general. The mayor worried it was a road  we don’t want to go down to be auditing countless groups looking to fly their flag over the Village hall.

  1. So was there some kind of vote taken? Did the Village Council informally agree to disagree, based on advice of counsel, and not take a vote? Was the decision the mayor’s to make? Will this issue come up again when activists get their knickers in a twist? Will the RBSA be restricted in its allowed signage because we decided not to raise the six-color flag over Village Hall?

  2. So no Steeler flag?

  3. Perfect. Thank you Mayor. Mature words by Sedon and Hache. I am sure in the not so distant future gay flag will be flown at will in Ridgewood’s pole but at least not this year. The thing that really irritates me the most and which makes me even more decided in rejecting flying of this flag is that I would probably be violently confronted for racism or some other bullshit like that if I were to express my opinion in a public space. Such sad times we’re living in.

  4. Perfect decision.

Or else they would also have to fly my Pastafarian flying sphagetti monster god flag.

  5. I wanted the Jolly Roger flown. After all, Government is a lot like Pirates.

  6. We are all Americans. There is only one flag to fly.

Once we start there will be no end to the special flag requests. The supporters of flying the gay pride flag think that it is inclusive. They fail to recognize that not everyone is into gay pride. Like it or not.

I agree with the post that suggested a pirate flag. Why not?

  7. On Facebook folks not happy. They posted the perfect solution – a link to Amazon for the purchase of flags. They all can fly the flags on their own personal flagpoles.

Leave Village Hall out of your personal projrcts

  8. Decision was appropriate and well explained. Slippery slope would be unending if this precedent were set to say yes to all.
