Last night we had residents report 4 car burglaries and 1 attempted theft. Neighboring towns report similar events. Once again, in the vast majority of incidents the owners left keys and/or key fobs in the vehicle – making the car an easy target for thieves. Organized car thieves are believed to utilize technology that detects vehicles with key fobs inside.
Do not make yourself a victim by leaving your vehicle accessible to thieves. Residents are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to always REMOVE key fobs and keys from their vehicles – even when the cars are parked inside a garage. In addition, residents should be sure to REMOVE VALUABLES from their vehicles and remember to LOCK CAR DOORS and activate the alarms where applicable.
As always, residents are asked to remain alert and contact your local police promptly regarding suspicious persons or incidents.

  1. Apparently having your Key Fob in the house is no longer good enough to stop some of these “sophisticated” thieves. They are now using new technology that allows them to unlock cars as long as the Key Fob is within operating distance. ie – You have your Key Fob in your kitchen drawer / purse…car in the driveway…and they can unlock your car. Police need to catch-up. Best practice until manufacturers catch-up is Key Fob in coffee can (signal won’t carry thru metal can.)

  2. welcome to the Bronx

  3. I park my 1998 Honda last in the driveway….they would be doing me a favor if they took it.

  4. Yesterday I came home and there were 3 RPD cars in the street.

They were talking to some solicitators. Eventually the solicitors left.

I’m okay with this…those guys could have been casing houses.

  6. My car is 22 years old. (It does not have a fob for me to hide at night.) Nevertheless, it spends its nights locked in the garage and has done so since it first came to live with us.
