Ridgewood, NJ: A judge in New Brunswick sentenced Dharun Ravi to 30 days in jail today for using a webcam to spy on his Rutgers University roommate Tyler Clementi having sex with a man, The case galvanized concern about suicide among gay teenagers but also prompted debate about the use of laws against hate crimes and bullying.

The case drew wide attention because his roommate, Tyler Clementi of Ridgewood NJ  jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, a few days after learning of the live streaming of his sexual encounter. A jury convicted Mr. Ravi in March of all 15 counts against him, which included invasion of privacy and bias intimidation. The relatively light sentence surprised many who were watching the hearing, as it came after the judge spent several minutes criticizing Mr. Ravi’s behavior. Ravi could have faced up to 10 years in prison.

  1. He got off way too easy. THey should deport this POS after he does his 30 days and community service.

  2. Fair sentence. Davi didn’t kill Tyler Clemente. He ran a webcam in his own dorm room. Tyler Clemente was the one who invited a 30-something man over to his dorm for a hookup during the first weeks of school…before he could even establish a relationship with his room mate. Even without the webcam, word would have got out about this kid’s indiscretions and people would have talked. TC needed to be able to deal with that, in college and for the rest of his life. He wasn’t. The webcam issue is a red herring.

  3. He would have gotten no jail time if he did the EXACT SAME THING to his heterosexual roomate kissing a 32 year old woman.

  4. The webcam was just the tipping point that led to Tyler Clementi’s death. Has anybody asked, why did he take his life in such a drastic fashion? I mean, jumping off the GW, Jesus, a large dose of pills would have been easier and less messier. But what led him to kill himself? Was he not accepted amongst his peers because he gay? Did he get a hard time at RHS because he was gay? Did his family disapprove of him being gay and where not accepting of it? Did he suffer from depression? There are so many questions that, I suppose, will never be answered and those that know the answers to some of them will never talk about it. Look, tClementi had the balls to tell his room mate of only a few weeks that, “hey buddy, I have a mate coming over for a few hours, can you bugger off while I get down to a little business?” I am sure that seeing a strange guy, the 30 year old or whatever, in the dorm had tounges wagging so really, was it the webcam?? I don’t think so BUT Ravi should not have tried to hide anything. He should have been honest and told the cops, sure, I left my webcam on and this is what it picked up – it was funny to see my new room mate with a dude in MY dorm room making out. No cover up, no lies, no jail, no harm.

  5. #4 that’s exactly why it’s a crime – he tried to cover it up. He knew what he did and what he caused and the cover up was due to guilty conscience. Everyone that has made the comparison to it being a 30yr old woman is missing something here…the woman would have likely pressed charges and this little sht would be in jail. The prejudice in these responses is unbelievable.

  6. #2 – It is actually the suicide and Tyler’s personal life that is a red herring. Ravi invaded his privacy, lied to investigators, and tampered with witnesses. That alone should be cause for more jail time, with or without the bias crime label.
