Ben Carson and Donald Trump are under fire for comments that they saw Muslims celebrating 9-11.
The Washington Post’s fact checker claimed it never happened to which Donald Trump replied thusly:

The New York Times quotation is far more damning. Here it is, with our emphasis.
Within hours of the terror attacks, F.B.I. agents hurriedly intercepted telephone calls in which suspected associates of Al Qaeda in the United Stateswere overheard celebrating the attacks. The Washington Post–the very same paper denying that anyone was celebrating the attacks–reported on September 16, 2011 that Palestinian authorities and the media were working together to stop people from seeing Palestinians celebrating the terrorist attacks. Here’s the relevant quote:

Lets go to the videotape of the “thousands and thousands” of people celebrating. Surely someone has it. If Trump saw it on tv then it is in the archives.
People tweeting that they saw it too is not proof of anything. They must have all been watching the same news show. What show was it? Lets get the tape and settle this once and for all.

Ben Carson admitted that he saw the West Bank celebrations. Time for the rest of you to think about your recovered memoey. The New York Times and other news organizations were unable to substantiate these claims. Prove them wrong!

Did the mainstream media put this much effort into challenging the statement made by Hillary in her tales of coming under sniper fire in Bosnia? At least there are elements of truth and doubt with Trump’s recollection whereas with Hillary, is was up there with Brian Williams in terms of pure fabrication. She came back with a “mis-spoke” response and we all just left it alone.

James, could you please provide a link to the CBS video or other reports of such a video? (I was in NJ on 9/11, so I am part of “anyone”, so I “was there”, but I am not one who “saw it”.)

Declan, if Trump just said “I mis-spoke”, I hope everyone would just drop the issue. But he hasn’t! He has said that written reports of a few tens of people possibly seen briefly celebrating in Paterson or Jersey City validates his claim that he saw video of thousands and thousands celebrating.
Did some Muslims in NJ celebrate after 9/11? Almost certainly! And there is evidence to prove that some did in NJ. That’s not surprising give what we know about extremist Muslims and those that sympathize with terrorists.
Did thousands and thousands celebrate, and was that celebration captured on video? No one, including Trump, has provided video or equivalent corroborating evidence of such celebration.
Why does this matter? If only tens of people would celebrate terrorism, the number of extremist sympathizers and potential terrorists might be relatively limited. If thousands and thousands would celebrate terrorism, then the number of extremist sympathizers and potential terrorists would be gigantic.
Such facts matter. They have impact on how we should investigate and stop potential terrorism. They impact what our priorities should be and how much risk exists.
I believe that Carson has said he mis-spoke in saying he saw the same thing. He said he was instead remembering videos of celebrations in the Middle East. If Trump said the same thing, there wouldn’t be an issue.
Nope, I was not in any those towns. (I thought you meant anyone in NJ would have seen the local news video coverage, not that you meant someone in those towns would have seen celebrations first hand.)

I under stand your skepticism, given the media is so unreliable and basically dishonest ,you could see( that’s see with my own eyes) pockets of people celebrating from the Heights in Jersey City , one of my coworkers said that there was a significant contingent in downtown Brooklyn also , maybe not thousands but a hundred for sure , as for Paterson , the state police blocked off access to the area for a few days . Trump may have exaggerated, like Hillary was “dead broke ” , but to deny the celebrations is a disservice to all the victims of the 9/11 . It time to stop the PC BS and deal with the enemy as they are as for video I am sure it will surface when its convenient.
James, thank you for admitting that Trump likely exaggerated his claims. Hillary and others have certainly done the same in the past, and I’m sure they will in the future. Since you seem to think it’s okay for Trump to exaggerate in order to make a point, I presume you’ll be consistent and avoid being hypocritical the next time a politician exaggerates in order to make a point, whether you agree with that point or not?

James, the footage was of people in Palestine celebrating. I remember it clearly. There is no footage of throngs of people in Paterson, JC or anywhere else in New Jersey celebrating on 9/11.
