Garrett speaks out against Affordable Care Act at CIANJ’s Healthcare Roundtable
July 26th, 2012

U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett told a packed meeting of CIANJ’s Healthcare Roundtable this week that the Affordable Care Act is a job killer and a “full assault against our economic recovery.”

The congressman from Sussex County said the federal reform program contains 21 individual tax increases that will drive up costs and hurt business. Instead, Garrett said other alternatives should be considered, such “patient-centered” coverage that uncouples health benefits from employment; selling health insurance across state lines and encouraging small businesses and individuals to pool risk across state lines, like large companies do.

Along with Garrett, CIANJ invited Neil Sullivan, an assistant commissioner of the state Department of Banking and Insurance, to speak at the roundtable, which was held at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck. The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, leaving the states to decide what their next steps will be to implement it.

But Sullivan said Gov. Chris Christie has declared he wants to wait until after the November presidential election before making any commitments. Mitt Romney, the presumed Republican nominee, said if he is elected he would repeal the law.
