Mahwah NJ, Mayor Bill Laforet was recalled from office on Tuesday night. The defeat for Laforet who twice won reelection was spearheaded by a local group called MahwahStrong.
The Mahwah mayor will become the first public official in Bergen County to be recalled in over 25 years.
Laforet tenure was controversial and involved the borough in what some saw as foolish litigation .
Residents voted for a new mayor: John Roth, a former councilman who challenged Laforet for mayor in 2016 and was pushed by the MahwahStrong group. Roth will take over as mayor once the township clerk certifies the election results in the next few days.
From the MahwahStrong Facebook page :
“This Election Day, one fact stands out from the rest; our current mayor will not work with the sitting council. With five seats up and only two new council candidates (Ferguson & Bader), we can be sure that the MAJORITY of the council will remain seated on November 7th.
Our town cannot afford another 24 months of infighting, negativity, divisive behavior and a complete lack of productive communication.
This is our chance to get our government back on track. You have the opportunity to elect leaders dedicated to working together to build a bright future for Mahwah, and removing those who refuse to.
The future of Mahwah is in your hands. Make history tomorrow with your vote!”
MahwahStrong would like to post unofficial results based on our tally.
Recall – Successful
Mayor – John Roth
Council – Jonathan Wong, Janet Ariemma, George Ervin, Robert Ferguson, Michelle Paz
Stay tuned for official results! Congratulations and thank you to each of you for getting out and voting!
