This weekend, please take a couple of hours to see the new movie, “Won’t Back Down” — which premieres on Friday, September 28, 2012.
“Won’t Back Down” is the story of a single mother who refuses to accept that her daughter must attend a chronically failing school. Upon learning of a new Parent-Trigger-style law, she, along with a courageous teacher at that school, fight to engage the community and turn the school around. The filmmakers have done their homework and the story is as true-to-life as any film I’ve seen.
At times, the movie — starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, and Holly Hunter — is heartbreaking. But it’s also optimistic…and watching “Won’t Back Down” is a great way to get energized for National School Choice Week 2013. Indeed, several of the scenes from the film (parent rallies) remind me of National School Choice Week events!
Like the characters in the movie, Americans everywhere want their children to go to the best schools — regardless of the type of schools — and are less willing to tolerate special interests and bureaucrats standing in their way. National School Choice Week is about celebrating school choice where it exists, and about demanding school choice where it doesn’t. This movie carries that message beautifully.
