Jersey peach production best in years, state says

HAMMONTON — New Jersey peach farmers are reaping a bounty this summer with one of their largest crops.

New Jersey, which is the fourth-largest producer of peaches in the nation behind California, South Carolina and Georgia, is projected to produce between 55 million and 60 million pounds of peaches over 5,500 acres in 2017, according to the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council.

In 2015, farmers grew 42.2 million pounds on 4,700 acres valued at $27.6 million.

Ridgewood NJ, On July 17th, NJ lottery started a pilot program to put Quick Draw into selected bars in New Jersey.

They selected not franchised or chain restaurants, but local establishments. As of now, there are only a handful of places in Bergen County. One that was picked and already running is our favorite pub in town Mac Murphy’s.

Quick Draw is basically Lotto w/ 80 numbers to pick. It’s very popular over the border in New York. You can also play any other lottery game there.

“Mac’s” has expanded their outdoor dining area and chef Shamus from the “Old Country” will delight your culinary needs.

Reader says Ridgewood’s CBD has become the largest open air food court in Bergen County

Ridgewood’s CBD has become the largest open air food court in Bergen County. We should embrace that and close Ridgewood Ave between Broad and Maple and make it a walking mall like Washington Street in Cape May, Main Street Charlottesville, Pearl Street Boulder, 4th Street Louisville, the list goes on. Sure NJ Transit bus people may complain, but fix that with a one-way (west obviously) Dayton Street. Changes like this would drive improvements on Franklin (while simplifying the intersections at Chestnut, Oak, Walnut and Cottage Place). It would push parking (or at least parking access) to the perimeter of that space and allow for a real walking village with diverse shops and restaurants to flourish. It would also make The Greek’s planters a non-issue! Who’s with me?

However, an average of 8,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues occur each year in the United States. In 2014, 16,600 patients went to emergency rooms due to injuries involving grills, and 1,600 children under age five suffered thermal burns, caused by touching a hot surface. Safety aside, grilling-related fires cause about $118 million in property damage each year.

Clearly, it’s important to keep safety in the forefront when enjoying all that your grill has to offer.

Here are a few common sense reminders on keeping your family and your home safe:

  • Keep the grill well away from your home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Remove grease or fat buildup from the grill and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended, and keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill at all times.
  • Always make sure the lid of a gas grill is open before lighting.
  • If using starter fluid for a charcoal grill, use only charcoal starter fluid, and never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquid to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • If your charcoal grill has an electric starter, use an extension cord.
  • When finished grilling, let the coals cool completely, then dispose in a metal container.

Now’s the Perfect Time for Fresh-Picked Peaches

The summer peach season is well underway and the farmers at Holtzhauser Farms know why Jersey peaches are the best around.

“We have an ideal climate for the growing season,” said Tom Holtzhauser, co-owner and operator of Holtzhauser Farms. “We get the perfect sun and temperature during the summer and it makes for an ideal peach.”

While New Jersey is typically known for its perfect peach-growing conditions, last year gave farmers an unusual challenge.

“On April 4th, 2016, the weather went down to 25 degrees … and it killed every single blossom in the orchard,” said Holtzhauser. “We lost our entire crop.”

Holtzhauser acknowledged that it’s always in the back of area farmers’ minds that a weather disaster can occur at any time.
