George Washington Middle School Alumni and Current Ridgewood High School Student Aarav Motivala Promotes Financial Literacy for Students

Ridgewood NJ, George Washington Middle School alumni and current Ridgewood High School student Aarav Motivala visited students in the GW Economics Club to share his experience with financing, investing, and economics. Aarav created Edunomix, a non-profit that provides free economics lessons to youth worldwide. Aarav credits Mr. Watkins’ 7th grade Social Studies class for inspiring him to pursue his interest in economics and game-based learning. One of the main components of Edunomix is game-based activities where students learn financial literacy.

George Neville Former Principal of the George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood Dead at 78

Ridgewood NJ, George Neville, 78, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022 in Princeton. He was born in Hartford, CT, grew up in Winchester, MA, and settled in Ridgewood, NJ. He graduated from Harvard University in 1966, attended Boston College Law School, and Tuft’s Graduate School in Massachusetts, where he met his wife of 49 years, Frances Jani. He enjoyed history, especially the American Civil War. He loved sports and was a three-sport athlete in college, participating in baseball, football, and basketball.  He earned All-American honors in baseball: a wonderful culmination to a youth spent on the baseball diamond where he and his friends honed their skills and eventually played in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1955 & ‘56.  He spent the bulk of his career in education as Principal of the George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, NJ.  There will always be a special place in his heart for his GW Family.  George loved people most of all and had a unique ability to assemble an exceptional learning environment.

Elementary Division Winner: I Love Music – Rohan van Beever

Ridgewood NJ, the annual Friends of Music (FOM) Concert was live at George Washington Middle School once again! Faculty members joined local professionals to put on a fantastic performance including everything from musical theater to opera to jazz to rock. Winners of the FOM Third Annual Song-Writing Competition were announced and had their compositions performed by professional musicians. Competition entries may be of any length and style, and they can be scored for any combination of instruments and/or voices. Four professional musicians/computers judged the entries.

Help the Ridgewood Eagles Robotics Team Go To an International Competition

Ridgewood NJ,  Eric Zhou  a 7th grader at George Washington Middle School is part of a robotics team called the Eagles. They are a group of innovators ranging from the ages 9-to 13 and they are competing in the First Lego League competition. This year, the team came in first place in the Mount Olive regional competition. Then, they came in second place in the NJ state competition. Because they came in second place, they were invited to an event called the FLL Razorback Invitational.

George Washington Middle School Student training for the Synchronized Swim Team Nationals in April and the Junior Olympics in July

Ridgewood NJ, George Washington Middle School student Grace Kim is a member of the synchronized swim team for the nationally renowned New Canaan Aquianas in New Canaan CT. Most recently she competed at the East Zone Championships in Tonawanda, NY where she earned several medals, including a first place finish. She stated, “the experience was rewarding and I’m grateful to have taken part in it”. Grace is currently training for Nationals in April and the Junior Olympics in July.

CDC Updated Guidance Emphasizes that Closing Schools for In-person Learning should be Among the last Resort to Control Spread of COVID

Ridgewood NJ, according to Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security ,on February 12, the US CDC published updated guidance to support schools’ efforts to mitigate COVID-19 risk for in-person classes. The biggest update is a new “phased mitigation” strategy, which couples risk mitigation measures with the level of community transmission. The guidance emphasizes 5 key mitigation mechanisms—mask use, physical distancing, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette, cleaning and sanitization, and surveillance and contact tracing—that are applicable across all levels of COVID-19 risk, but it also provides actionable information regarding how to implement those and other strategies at various levels of COVID-19 risk. The guidance also breaks down specific recommendations for elementary, middle, and high schools, and it includes guidance for extracurricular activities, including sports.

Remote Learning Brings a New Set of Issues for COVID at Ridgewood Schools

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood schools reported the following Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases for the week ending January 8, 2021.

Four individuals at Ridgewood High School; these cases are of known origin.
Three individuals at Benjamin Franklin Middle School; one case is of known origin and two cases are of unknown origin.
One individual at George Washington Middle School; this case is of known origin.
One individual at Ridge Elementary School; this case is of known origin.

The Village Health Department has determined no close contacts in school were found for all of the cases; therefore, only the individuals and family members are quarantined.

Please remember, during this time of remote learning, if a family member becomes symptomatic or tests positive, please communicate with your school nurse.

Ridgewood Schools Report Multiple Cases of Coronavirus

Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood School system sent out a  letter inform informing parents and gradians of the following Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive cases. Two individuals at Ridgewood High School have tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19); these cases are unrelated to each other. Two individuals at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and two individuals at George Washington Middle School have tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19); these cases were unrelated to each other and the individuals were not within the school buildings.
