Located only 20 miles away from Midtown Manhattan, New York City, this small village from New Jersey has seen an increase in population in the past decades. With more and more people willing to trade the loud, stressful, and narrow streets of the Big Apple for true oases of relaxation, it comes as no surprise that New Jersey locations have become more popular.
Like many towns and villages around the area, Ridgewood has a rich history, dating back from 1700, when Johannes Van Emburgh built the first home here. However, the town wasn’t created until the end of the 19th century, in 1894.
Although it counts for only 25,000 people, Ridgewood has great potential and it is estimated that it will increase its population even further due to the laid-back style, the relatively low prices of the real estate industry, and its country charm. There are also many things you can do around, so, if you plan on stopping by for a weekend getaway, here is what you shouldn’t miss.
One of the most popular places to visit in town, the Hermitage is an 18th century home with plenty of history on its own. Built in a Gothic Revival architectural style, the fourteen-room mansion now houses a museum built in 1848. You can enjoy a guided tour for a small donation and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
The Saddle River County Park
Stretching from Rochelle Park to Ridgewood, this park is located along the Saddle River. The place is perfect for spending a quiet afternoon and enjoying a wide variety of activities, including fishing, walking or cycling.
Although the access to the park is limited to bikers and pedestrians, you can still bring your motorcycle to the premises and take a short trip around the park. All you need to do is read this article to find the perfect gadgets to guide you and take some wonderful pictures.
One of the most popular landmarks of the park is the waterfall that is located in the Glen Rock section of the trail. Apart from that, you can also walk to the Easton Tower, also known as “The Mill” and it’s a great spot for photos.
If you’re an avid angler, you can find plenty of good spots to fish for bass and trout around the Glen Rock Duck Pond, the Waterfall Area or the Ridgewood Duck Pond.
The Garret Mountain Reservation
Located near Ridgewood, in Woodland Park, this 568-acre reservation covers the north part of the First Watchung Mountain. It provides a wide array of outdoor activities, including bird watching, picnic areas, walking and running trails, basketball courts, and a good fishing game on the Barbour’s Pond.
And, if you want to learn more about the place’s history, you can visit the Lambert Castle that now hosts the Passaic County Museum which is open to the public. The 19th-century castle was recently renovated and provides a good spot for taking some amazing pictures.
The Graydon Pool
When the weather allows it, this historical site represents a great alternative to spending quality time outdoors, enjoying the sun. It costs around $10 to get inside but keep in mind that the place is usually crowded, especially during the weekends. If you find a good spot, you can go for a swim in the “plake” (a cool noun that combines the words “pool” and “lake”), relax on the warm sand, and even watch a movie.
Unfortunately, the location needs to be preserved better since in 2010 was voted one of the “10 Most Endangered Historic Sites” in the State of New Jersey.
