Reader Suggests the State Name a Rest Stop After Jim McGreevey

i

“Perhaps the state will name a rest stop on the highway for him. After all it was reported that was one of his proudest accomplishments, servicing random men at these places.
Didn’t the DMV rename a particular auto accident scenario as a “MCGreeevy”?
I think it used to be referred to as a “rear ender”…. But hey that’s political correctness these days! “

Men Not at Work at Troubled Mall Development

Feb 2, 2017 · by Ilya Marritz

The half-built American Dream mall in New Jersey’s Meadowlands has yet again missed a target date to secure construction financing, raising fresh questions about the developer’s ability to complete the project.

On December 8th, developer Don Ghermezian told WNYC all the money is teed up  — nearly $2.7 billion dollars to complete work on the 90-acre mall near Met Life Stadium. The money is to be raised through tax-free municipal bonds and through private borrowing.

“I anticipate that prior to the Christmas holiday the public will know fully about the commitment on the financing,” Ghermezian said.

But Christmas came and went. Then a company spokesman said early January was more likely. Now it’s February, and there’s still no news of how the Ghermezians’ company, Triple Five, will pay to make a retail and entertainment pleasure dome out of the eyesore on state-owned land next to the New Jersey Turnpike.

McGreevey prison program moving from church at center of FBI investigation

PATERSON — A non-profit prison re-entry program housed in a Paterson building at the center of an FBI investigation is moving mid-December to another facility nearby to accommodate more people.

The FBI raided Paterson city offices earlier this month searching for documents related to the renovation of a Montgomery Street property where the non-profit New Jersey Re-Entry Corporation is located.

Gov. James McGreevey, who helps administer the program, acknowledged Tuesday that the investigation “expedited” the non-profit’s relocation, but that the organization had planned on moving to another space to help more people.

“It expedited our plans as we had the intention of developing or providing increased space to accommodate a greater number of clients,” McGreevey said. “It seemed an appropriate time to secure a different site.”

McGreevey comes to Paterson to defend controversial prison reentry initiative

PATERSON — Former Gov. Jim McGreevey made a surprise appearance at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting in an attempt to defuse criticism aimed at the new prisoner reentry program he is launching in Paterson.

Speaking to the council members, McGreevey said a similar reentry initiative he oversees in Jersey City has achieved low recidivism rates and high employment among its participants by providing them with counseling, job training and other services to ease their transition to life outside prison.

Then the former governor addressed council members’ concerns about Paterson’s use of municipal public works department employees working overtime to complete renovations on the privately-owned Montgomery Street building where some of the post-prison services will be provided.

McGreevey said the “crazed drive to get this done quickly” stemmed from concerns that the city could lose the $180,000 federal grant paying for the work if it were not completed quickly. McGreevey’s explanation matched the one provided by Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres on Monday. The mayor has said the overtime costs would be covered by the federal grant.

In an interview after his presentation to the council, McGreevey said he expected the program to begin operation in the middle of this month with its first group of 11 to 15 participants. He said that it would serve between 175 and 250 released inmates per year. In an effort to dispel some residents’ concerns that parolees would be living at the Montgomery Street building, McGreevey said the site would only be used during business hours to provide services and referrals.

“I believe we’re changing lives through the process of reentry,” said McGreevey, chairman of the board of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation, the nonprofit organization working on the project.

For the most part, council members seemed to show deference to the former governor as they complimented his efforts. Not until later in the night, long after McGreevey had left the building, did several council members sharply question administration officials about the project

American Dream adding 10 more retailers

THE RECORD

Ten more retailers were announced for American Dream Meadowlands on Monday by developer Triple Five, which has set fall 2017 as the opening for the shopping and entertainment complex.

Familiar women’s clothing retailers Victoria’s Secret and Lulelemon are joined by venerable mall stores Banana Republic and The Gap; MAC cosmetics; and a Microsoft computer store. Also on the latest list are Aritzia, Uniqlo, Zara, and Pink.

Triple Five president Don Ghermezian called the latest round of announcements “just the beginning” of a rollout that he said would set a new standard for “the New York metropolitan market.” Ghermezian recently promised to make deals with “SoHo boutique-style” retailers that traditionally have not been found in malls.

The new signups follow last week’s announcement of Hermes as well as news earlier this month that a Saks Fifth OFF Fifth outlet store as well as 100,000-square-foot anchor tenants Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue. Ghermezian said the latter two stores would be the largest at the site.

The 2.9-million-square-foot American Dream shopping and entertainment project is to include a 639,000-square-foot indoor water and amusement park currently under construction, as well as a 22-screen movie complex, an indoor snowdome, a 286-foot observation wheel, and other attractions.
