THE RECORD
North Jersey undocumented immigrants — and their lawyers — have gathered birth certificates, financial records, school transcripts and stamped passports in anticipation of today, when they can begin to apply for work permits and avoid deportation.
But they said they still had to review the application and its instructions released on Tuesday afternoon, and that it would take days before they would start filing the forms. President’s Obama’s policy known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was announced two months ago.

Illegal immigrants can qualify if they were under 16 when they entered the U.S., and under 31 when the program was announced on June 15, and have continuously lived in this country for at least five years. They must be either a high school graduate, obtained a GED or have been honorably discharged from the military. Anyone convicted of a felony or “significant” misdemeanor is not eligible.
