Reader asserts “distracted driving” is caused by boredom from driving so slowly.

The 25 mph speed limit is more dangerous than 35mph.
The rate of travel is so slow that your mind wanders.
You are lulled by the slow rate of speed to think you are able to safely perform other tasks – like texting – you feel confident in your ability to perform these tasks due to the slow rate of travel.

A 35mph (or even 30mph) speed limit is inherently safer since it requires more concentration by the driver but is still well within the capabilities of virtually every driver (unlike say a 100mph speed limit which requires even more concentration, knowledge and reactions but is beyond the capabilities of many drivers).

The village wide 25mph edict is another wrong headed politically correct decision that has the reverse results of its intent – making our streets more dangerous rather than safer

  1. Hey buddy, I was drivin at speed limit. that is why I was able to avoid killing various animals that popped out of nowhere including a deer on a residential street.

Also balls from ballgames that small kids run after into street from their yards. I avoid killing kids. Unexpected driver maneuvers that are illegal from other drivers on those boring roads that want you to drive 25; I avoid those accidents.

Also bicyclists who weave into middle of street. I avoid hitting those.

Most accidents occur close to home on those roads that require 25.

Reader who finds 25 too boring to follow should have his license taken away and James , can you find out who he is and report him to the police.

I am deadly serious. I feel that reader is a danger to others.

  2. Driving safety is about reaction time and awareness. Reaction time is a function of speed–this is an immutable law of physics: the faster you go the longer it takes to stop. Awareness seems like a problem for you–you describe what sounds like a serious attention deficit. If you can’t keep your mind from wandering on residential streets you should not be operating a motor vehicle.

  3. So, if we drive faster we drive better?

  4. Religiously using a full stop (reduce speed to zero for at least three seconds) at every stop sign also prevents one from proceeding too far out into the intersection before finally spotting an oncoming car to your left (usually speeding) that has the right of way. Same dynamic–forward momentum from a California rolling stop.

  5. I guess the blog did not care for my comment earlier today because i have not seen it poste.

  6. Then lets lower the speed limit to 20mph or maybe 10mph… anybody good with 5mph?
    Safety first
    Do it for the kids

Seriously – why is 25mph OK – why not lower? Its physics. What’s so magical about 25mph?

James – maybe you should turn in 10:14am (aka “buddy”) and get his license taken away since he is condoning driving 25mph.

  7. This is aka Buddy responding : Twenty-five is the speed limit. Of course, especially on residential streets I often drive 5, 10 , 20, mile per hour. depending on what is going on around me, the weather, the pedestrians and children playing in yards, the bikers, the lighting.

I thought everyone did, 7:36 p.m., I guess not. You’re the guy who is speeding 40 miles per hour at the intersection thinking it’s a quiet residential street.

You, 7:36 p.m. must be one of the angry speeders who cause serious accidents because you have such a sense of entitlement and little regard for life.
    .

  8. The writer of this article’s logic is right up there with a belief I held when I was about 18, when I thought I drive better after a couple of beers.

  9. We should ban all vehicles (motor or otherwise) to increase the safety of our kids (and wild animals)
Running should also be barred except in closed purpose built courses and then only allow individuals who have received special training to run
Walking should be restricted to a certain speed as well – never can be too safe.
Also children should not be allowed outside of the house without trained saftey care givers and then only for limited times in enclosed, vehicle free yards. Safety first!
