With only hours remaining before Hurricane Sandy hits landfall, Ridgewood emergency officials were continuing early Monday to ensure the safety of all residents and village property.

Police vehicles were already moved to higher ground, with the fleet lining North Maple Avenue several feet above the Village Hall parking lot where they are typically parked. Other village cars were moved out of the lot, and door dams were put into place in front of the municipal building’s first floor entrance facing the Kasschau Band Shell.

Over the course of the past few days, the Ridgewood Office of Emergency Management as well as the police and fire departments have posted various advisories and warnings on its website, the village website and on social media pages. Officials from those agencies and the village government stressed the importance that residents and business owners follow the information contained in those posts.

“This is a very serious storm, and it is important that folks take it seriously,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said Monday morning. “Don’t second guess the warnings. Don’t be fooled by the storm’s slow movement. It is coming, and it could be very destructive.”

OEM officials emphasized preparation and that residents and homeowners remain indoors. OEM Coordinator Jeremy Kleiman also advised that some residents should be prepared to evacuate their homes, particularly those living in low-lying areas.
