Hawthorne NJ, early on Sunday morning, a partial collapse of a two-story brick building led to the evacuation of nine individuals and six pets from the Hawthorne Garden Apartments at 100 Rock Road. Fire Chief Joseph Speranza reported no injuries, but 12 units were evacuated due to the incident that occurred just before 10 a.m.

Boyd Loving reported, “Dozens of residents were evacuated from their residences in a garden apartment complex at 100 Rock Road, Hawthorne following a Sunday morning, 01/28, interior floor & wall collapse in one of the complex’s buildings. No injuries were reported in connection with either the collapse, or the evacuation process. Hawthorne PD, Hawthorne FD, Hawthorne EMS, and Hawthorne OEM personnel responded to the incident. Emergency responders were awaiting the arrival of a structural engineer before determining when evacuees would be allowed to return. A temporary shelter for evacuees was opened at the Hawthorne Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Hawthorne Mayor John V. Lane was observed inspecting the damaged building.

The affected residents, along with three dogs and three cats, were relocated to the Hawthorne Ambulance Corps Building. Emergency responders, including firefighters, were on-site managing the situation. Preliminary findings suggest that water damage to the building and ground saturation from recent storms caused the collapse. Chief Speranza mentioned that four units were particularly compromised.

An engineer’s assessment is deemed necessary, and there is a likelihood of losing part of the building or, at least, the four affected units. The ground’s saturation is a concern, and Chief Speranza emphasized that the situation may not improve and is prone to further failure. In September, a section of the brick wall at Hawthorne High School collapsed due to heavy rainfall, causing no injuries and not impacting the building’s structural integrity.
