>Mount Carmel’s choir conquers Italy

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Choir members from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood have just fulfilled what for many had been a lifelong musical and spiritual dream when they sang at a Vatican Mass in July. And it wasn’t just any Mass – they actually sang a Sunday Mass at the second most important of St. Peter’s 29 altars, in an area not normally open to tourists.

The dream trip started with two choir members, Clare Jordan and Margaret Mullen, who thought a “road trip” to Italy would be just the thing for their group. They had both been to Italy before and wanted to share the food, sights and culture with their choir friends. Their thought was to give guest performances in two churches – one in Florence and one in Venice – with plenty of sightseeing in between.

At first, that seemed enough of a trip, but then Director of Music Peter Sicko decided to write a letter to the Vatican requesting the opportunity to sing at a Mass. With help from Msgr. Ronald Rozniak (Father Ron), Sicko composed what must have been a compelling letter, because the request was approved.

“We had asked for a relatively minor Mass on a Saturday evening,” recalled Sicko, who is still overwhelmed by what they actually accomplished. Along with Connie Arcilla, the choir’s conductor, he worked hard to prepare the group for their once-in-a-lifetime performance.

THE RECORD

Teaneck students will soon be required to meet a higher bar in the classroom if they want to compete on the field.

By the 2014-15 school year, they will be required to maintain a 2.5 grade-point average — typically somewhere between a C plus and B minus — to play sports under a new policy that gradually raises the eligibility standard.

When school starts this week, students will have to maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA to participate in sports. In the 2012-13 school year students will have to maintain a 2.3 GPA. Under the district’s previous policy, students were required to have a 2.0 GPA during the previous marking period to play sports.

The new policy may set the strictest eligibility standard in North Jersey.

Most school districts, including Wayne, Ridgewood, Bergenfield and Paramus, follow the minimum requirement set by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. The NJSIAA requires that students stay on target to have the necessary number of credits to graduate set by state regulations. Under the NJSIAA standard, a student could be passing classes with a D average and be eligible to play sports.

RIDGEWOOD  NJ— The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus opens its new season Sept. 7 and is looking for men who like to sing.

On October 11, 1909, eight men met at the Ridgewood home of Frank R. Pawley do discuss a men’s singing club. A week later, 10 men gathered in the village library, a room in the First National Bank Building. The group paid 75 cents per night to use the room and began singing together, with Dewitt Clinton, Jr., as director. The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus was born.

Others joined the club and by December, it was agreed that a concert would be presented in February at the Library, but the actual decision was left to the director, and the first Performance was in May. The opener in that concert was the rousing “Winter Song.”

Club membership quickly rose from the 18 who sang the first concert to 35. The members met weekly on Wednesdays from October to May, and in 1913, the club gave it’s first performance of “Pilgram’s Chorus” frim Wagner’s Tannhäuser.

Variety in repertoire was common in Orpheus Club concerts. A program might include “The Boog-a-Boo,” a ragtime number, “Pld Black Joe,” the Stephen Foster song, comedy numbers like “But They Didn’t,” and classics, sometimes sung in French or German.

Ten years after its founding, the Orpheus Club was making guest appearances around New Jersey, and traveled as far as Brookly to sing at a fundraiser for the rebuilding of the Baptist Temple, which had suffered a fire.

As the years continued , the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus remained a significant part of New Jersey’s cultural life. When the Kasschau Memorial Band shell was dedicated in Ridgewood, the club sang at the inauguration.

In 1962, Richard Lane signed on as pianist for the club, beginning a distinguished career that would continue for 42 years until his death in 2004. A brilliant composer and teacher, Lane wrote 20 numbers for the Club and today’s concerts always feature at least one of Richard’s compositions.

Today, the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus includes about 50 singers from New York and New Jersey and generally makes eight to 10 appearances annually including four formal concerts. The Club has sung “Alto Rhapsody” (Brahms) with the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra as well as “The Testament of Freedom” (Thompson) and “Hymn to the Nations” (Verdi) with the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea. The men of Orpheus have joined with the Ridgewood Choral to sing “Song of Democracy” (Hanson) and appeared with the Ridgewood Concert Band to sing the music of Aaron Copland and Richard Wagner.

In the Spring of 2005, the Chorus made its Lincoln Center debut, performing at the Lincoln Center Library with the Palisades Virtuosi chamber ensemble. Additional performances in recent years have included concerts at the Kasschau Memorial Band shell in Ridgewood, singing in Ridgewood’s Independence Day parade, area churches, and in November 2009, a presentation of Beethoven’s Fantasia for Piano, Chorus, and Orhcestra, Op. 80 (the Choral Fantasy) with the Ridgewood Choral, the Ridgewood High School Chamber Choir, and the Eastern Christian High School Chorus.

Richard Lane’s composition declares: “We are men who like to sing. We are the men of Orpheus.” For more than 100 years.

The Orpheus Club rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 8 PM in The Georgian Room at The Cupola Senior Residence, West 100 Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus, NJ .

For anyone interested in joining the Club for the Winter 2010 Season, we will begin our spring rehearsal schedule on Wednesday, September 8th. We have openings in all sections.

>Teachers’ unions: all for accountability … in theory

>Teachers’ unions: all for accountability … in theory
By Bob Bowdon

In 1984, the Ministry of Plenty handled rationing. The Ministry of Love
was in charge of torture. And in the summer of 2011, life imitated art
when the National Education Association announced it supports the use of
student performance in teacher evaluations. So says the group’s latest position paper on the subject. Sometimes, you see, organizations say the opposite of what they mean.

The New York Times took the bait, using the headline
“Union shifts position on teacher evaluations.” The casual
headline-skimmer might be led to wonder, have bona fide education
reformers infiltrated the NEA Politburo? Then you come across this
Orwellian head fake of a phrase in The Times’s coverage:

“But blunting the policy’s potential impact, the union also made
clear that it continued to oppose the use of existing standardized test
scores to judge teachers, a core part of the federally backed teacher
evaluation overhauls already under way in at least 15 states.”

Battered gardens can be spruced up with fall plantings
Saturday, September 3, 2011

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for North Jerseyans.

I don’t need to remind you, we’ve all been taking it on the chin big time.

Not that they are high priority right now, but our gardens have taken a beating as well. They’ve had to endure extreme temperatures, followed by lots of precipitation — and then Irene dropped by with her rain and winds.

Many gardeners may just want to give up and begin looking forward to next year. But it’s not time to throw in the trowel just yet.

Donna Dorsey, owner of Goffle Brook Farm & Garden Center in Ridgewood, thinks there is plenty to look forward to this autumn. She says there are many plants that can be added in fall to help spruce up our battered yards.

>Black unemployment: Highest in 27 years

>Black unemployment: Highest in 27 years
By Annalyn Censky @CNNMoney September 2, 2011: 3:13 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The August jobs report was dismal for plenty of reasons, but perhaps most striking was the picture it painted of racial inequality in the job market.

Black unemployment surged to 16.7% in August, its highest level since 1984, while the unemployment rate for whites fell slightly to 8%, the Labor Department reported.

>Report: Buffett’s Berkshire Owes $1 Billion In Back Taxes

>Report: Buffett’s Berkshire Owes $1 Billion In Back Taxes
Thursday, 01 Sep 2011 06:37 PM
By Newsmax Wires

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett triggered a major debate over taxes recently when he wrote in The New York Times that he should be paying more to the federal government. He called on Washington lawmakers to up tax rates on the rich.

But it turns out that Buffett’s own company, Berkshire Hathaway, has had every opportunity to pay more taxes over the last decade. Instead, it’s been mired in a protracted legal battle with the Internal Revenue Service over a bill that one analyst estimates may total $1 billion.

Yes, that’s right: while Warren Buffett complains that the rich aren’t paying their fair share his own company has been fighting tooth and nail to avoid paying a larger share.

The story of Berkshire’s years-long tax battle, which is generally known in business circles, took on new life this week when a group called Americans for Limited Government (ALG) reported that, according to Berkshire Hathaway’s own annual report, the company is embroiled in an ongoing standoff over its tax bills

President Barack Obama was hit with more devastating jobs news on Friday, less than a week before he gives his heavily touted speech to Congress on getting unemployment down.

No new net jobs were created in August according to Labor Department figures and the jobless rate remained the same at 9.1 percent.

At the same time a new Fox News polls showed three out of every five voters say they are disappointed with Obama’s handling of the jobs issue.

    >US economy created no job growth in August

    >US economy created no job growth in August, data show

First time since 1945 that government has reported net monthly job change of zero

WASHINGTON — Employment growth ground to a halt in August, as sagging consumer confidence discouraged already skittish U.S. businesses from hiring, keeping pressure on the Federal Reserve to provide more monetary stimulus to aid the struggling economy.

Nonfarm payrolls were unchanged last month, the Labor Department said Friday. It was the first time since 1945 that the government has reported a net monthly job change of zero. The August payrolls report was the worst since September 2010, while nonfarm employment for June and July was revised to show 58,000 fewer jobs
