Solar gains in N.J.

For the first time, California no longer reigns as the U.S. state with the largest commercial solar market, and it’s lost that spot to New Jersey, according to a new report on the booming solar industry.

The commercial solar market in New Jersey jumped 170 percent from the first quarter of this year to the second quarter, said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, a trade group. As a result, New Jersey’s photovoltaic (PV) installations now account for 24 percent of all those in the U.S. — up from 15 percent at the end of March.

The administration of Gov. Chris Christie termed New Jersey’s statistics as good news.
Overall, California still maintains a lead in power produced from solar, said Jeff Tittel, director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, but the Garden State’s progress is notable.

“This is one of those things where I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” Tittel said.  (Koch and Schoonejongen, Gannett)

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

There will be some extra illumination in Ridgewood this Sunday as military families gather for a candle-lighting ceremony at Van Neste Square in honor of Gold Star Mother’s Day.

A national observance in honor of mothers and families whose sons or daughters have been killed while on duty in the United States military, Gold Star Mother’s Day takes place on the last Sunday of September each year, accompanied by a proclamation from the president.

This Sunday will mark the first time an official commemoration has been conducted in the village, something American Legion Post 53 member Bob Paoli attributes to a simple fact.

Bring in the clowns:Traffic expert testifies before Ridgewood council on Valley proposal

Even with suggested improvements to traffic infrastructure near The Valley Hospital, the facility is already too large for its neighborhood, according to one expert whose testimony in front of the Village Council on Monday night raised new questions about the hospital’s “Renewal” project.

Joe Staigar, the traffic engineer who testified in front of the council at its second hearing on the hospital’s expansion proposal, pointed to serious traffic problems around Valley Hospital’s campus at North Van Dien and Linwood avenues. At peak times, students leaving nearby schools weave through gridlocked traffic in the hospital’s driveways, and drivers sit through multiple traffic signal cycles to get through intersections, he said.

In ethically challenged NJ : Christie hammers home ethics reforms in town hall
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie roused the crowd Wednesday at his second town hall event of the week to push his stalled year-old package of bills to strengthen the state’s ethics laws.
“It seems like a ban on dual-office holding and two public salaries, we can all agree on that, right? It’s not a Republican or Democratic issue. We should all be able to come together and say it’s wrong,” Christie told the crowd packed into a senior center in Sayreville, as two local priests looked on from the front row.
After all, who doesn’t want more ethics?
“Not even a hearing — they acted as if it’s not even there,” the governor said of the Democratic leaders in the Legislature. “What that tells me that they again don’t want to tell you what’s going on.”
But while the concepts seem simple — lawmakers should only be able to hold one elected office, should only get paid for one public job, and should disclose their conflicts of interest and as much information as about their finances as the Executive Branch — Democrats say the bills are an oversimplified smokescreen brought back around by the governor as an election nears.  (DeFalco, Associated Press)

N.J. schools fulfill mandate to teach financial literacy

Millions of American adults are learning the lessons of their financial mistakes as the current recession lumbers on.

So are their kids.
The 2011-12 school year is the first in which New Jersey public schools are required to administer personal finance courses, part of the legacy of former Gov. Jon S. Corzine, previously CEO of Goldman Sachs. The global financial crisis spurred schools to develop curricula voluntarily, well before it was required by state law.
“We already had it in place. Now we just make sure it’s aligned with state requirements,” said Kevin Kitchenman, superintendent of West Deptford Public Schools.

West Deptford High School has offered personal finance classes as an elective for at least three years. This year’s freshman class will be the first required to fulfill 2.5 credits in financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial literacy in order to graduate. Washington Township High School has taken the further step of offering a full-year course, as opposed to a half-year class.  (Roh, Gannett)

Child Predators :State assemblyman’s poll finds support for repeal of new-driver decal law

A state assemblyman said Wednesday that an online survey he conducted found widespread noncompliance with the law requiring new drivers to display red decals on their cars and strong support for the law’s repeal.
Assemblyman Robert Schroeder, R-Bergen, said 86 percent of respondents to his survey said it was important or very important to change the law requiring the decals to be placed on license plates when new drivers are behind the wheel.

He said there was more support for other provisions in New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) Program, such as limits on the hours in which new drivers can drive and the number of passengers allowed in the car. But only 21 percent of young drivers said they always or often complied with the decal law. Sixty-three percent said they never do, and another 7 percent said they rarely use the decals, Schroeder said.
Reasons cited for noncompliance included fear of being targeted by stalkers or someone who would harm the young driver and fear of being profiled for enforcement by police.  (Froonjian, Press of Atlantic City)

Starting this school year, Ridgewood teachers will have access to a new ongoing professional development consortium through a partnership between the district and Montclair State University (MSU).

Called the Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal (MSUNER), the organization is a partnership among the university and New Jersey school districts from across multiple counties that aims to promote “the simultaneous renewal of schools and teacher education through collaboration between and among the university and member school districts,” according to the MSUNER website.

The Ridgewood school district was accepted into the program in the spring following an application process and a site visit from MSUNER representatives, said Superintendent Daniel Fishbein.

>Islamic Center Opens Its Doors Near Ground Zero

An Islamic cultural center near the site of the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center held its first exhibit Wednesday evening, the enthusiasm at the opening belying its troubled beginnings.

As a small orchestra played traditional Middle Eastern instruments, people crowded into the center, where a photo exhibit of New York children of different ethnicities lined the walls.

Sharif El-Gamal, the center’s developer, said the biggest error on the project was not involving the families of 9/11 victims from the start.

>Obama’s Jobs Bill looks to End State Sovereignty

>Obama’s Jobs Bill looks to End State Sovereignty
Ron DuBois

The Eleventh Amendment of the US Constitution reads, “The judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by citizens of another State, or by citizens or subjects of any Foreign State.” In other words, the Federal Courts, including the Supreme Court, cannot intervene or interfere with, any lawsuit brought against a State by a citizen of any State, or a citizen of another country. Such a suit must be resolved by the State’s Courts.

As part of Obama’s “Jobs Bill”, there is a section, described in the forwarded article, that negates the 11th Amendment protection currently enjoyed by the States. Now , I’m not sure the Bill, if passed and signed by Obama into law, can legally supercede the Constitution. My understanding of the Constitution is that it would take a Constitutional Amendment to do this. Legality notwithstanding, if the Bill becomes law, you can be sure the Administration will make every attempt to enforce it. Without my going into explanatory detail, I’m sure you understand that once a State takes money under the Jobs Bill, the Federal Courts will assume a power over the States that the Constitution specifically denied.

>LINKER DROPS OUT

>LINKER DROPS OUT

(Ridgewood, NJ): I launched my campaign for the U.S. Senate because America is on an unsustainable course. And for the future of our country I could not sit idly by and allow politicians to destroy the last best hope for freedom on earth. Without bold, principled leadership in Washington, America could become, in the not-to-distant future, a second-rate power along the lines of a half dozen European countries now facing severe crises. Career politicians more concerned about their own reelection have failed to solve our problems and have in many cases actually caused them. They have brought America to the brink.

My family inspired me to run for the U.S. Senate. Now, I must exit this race for them as well.

About eight years ago my wife was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Over the years, her illness has been relatively under control until very recently when it began to rapidly progress. I have been dedicating as much time as possible to my family, which has been to the detriment of my campaign. My family must be my priority and to run an effective U.S. Senate campaign I would be neglecting my duties as a father and as a husband given my wife’s current condition. With two young children at home, I have a moral obligation to take care of my family before anything else and must put off running for political office at this time.

I hope, and pray, that Republicans in New Jersey nominate a principled conservative for the U.S. Senate in 2012 who cares about making a positive difference for our future. I would look forward to supporting this individual to the fullest extent possible.

I want to thank all the wonderful folks who supported me during my brief campaign and I look forward to seeing and working with you all in the future

Ridgewood High School football game moved to Don Bosco

“The artificial turf fields have continued to be plagued by excessive “clean-up” costs. RHS sports programs are suffering as work continues to repair the latest storm damage from flooding. On several occasions I have called upon the BOE, as the field owner, to join with the Village, sports boasters and neighbors and see what can be done to resolve this continual cycle of flood damage, field closure and expensive repair. I am sure that intelligent, creative parties working together in good faith can devise solutions. Unfortunately, the BOE and the superintendent have ignored this offer of cooperation. Please BOE, do not miss this opportunity.

Christie to fast-track NJ medical schools merger

Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday that his administration will move quickly to merge Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and a public health school into Rutgers University’s Central Jersey campus.

An advisory committee he appointed to examine the future of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey filed an interim report Tuesday, and Christie said he will swiftly enact its ideas through an executive reorganization. Such a move can be vetoed by the Legislature within two months of its formal filing, but it doesn’t require lawmaker approval to be enacted.

The committee will also assess the future of medical education in North and South Jersey, but those recommendations will wait until a final report is filed by year’s end.

UMDNJ runs educational programs in both regions: University Hospital in Newark is struggling financially, and Rowan University is developing a medical school with Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
Christie alluded to the criminal investigation of UMDNJ for Medicare and Medicaid fraud he pursued as U.S. attorney for New Jersey, which ended with a federal monitor installed to ensure governance changes at the school.  (Symons, Gannett)

>Valley Renewal : The little guy who goes to work every day and pays taxes does not matter!

I don’t agree that Valley Hospital is a non-profit that serves the greater good nor do I agree with the scale of what they are looking to do. The Westwood area wants a good Hospital the a large number of us do not want Valley to expand to the degree they are demanding. In a perfect world the people of Ridgewood and Westwood would get what they want.

But, this is not a perfect world it is the real world. The sad truth is that Ridgewood was urbanized years ago and many of us still long for the Ridgewood of the past. A Ridgewood that is long gone.

I hate to admit it but the Valley expansion is a foregon conclusion. If the Village does not approve it Valley will go to court and the courts will approval all or most of the plan.

I truly wish I would turn out to be wrong, but a lifetime of dealing with government and big business tell me otherwise. The little guy who goes to work every day and pays taxes does not matter!
