THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Village Council members were unanimous in their opposition to the Valley Hospital “Renewal” plan on Tuesday.

Speaking at a special public meeting on the proposed $750 million expansion project that would have seen Valley double in size on its 15-acre lot, the five members of the council all expressed similar concerns with Valley’s plans: that construction would threaten the quality of life of neighboring residents and students; traffic would be adversely impacted during and following renovations; and the excavation process for underground building posed threats to the village’s aquifer and the foundations of nearby homes.

>I really think it’s time for the Village to enter serious discussions about receiving either fees, PILOTs or both going forward from Valley

>I really think it’s time for the Village to enter serious discussions about receiving either fees, PILOTs or both going forward from Valley

Once the Council’s vote is formally done next week and becomes official, I really think it’s time for the Village to enter serious discussions about receiving either fees, PILOTs or both going forward from Valley, so that it pays for more of all the Village resources it already uses even in its CURRENT size and configuration.

Ms. Meyers has indicated NOW she wants to have a “conversation”. And these things need to be important components of that conversation.

Like most here (and contrary to very dubious “surveys”), I was never against Valley, but certainly was against the proposed plan.

I’m confident something more reasonable for the site could be done, that better balances what Valley feels it needs with Ridgewood’s interests as the host community.

And whatever revised plan is proposed, getting Valley to start paying something more toward its fair share for all it uses needs to be part of that discussion and plan.

>Valley’s Board of Directors should consider “asking” Meyers for her resignation, along with that of other top admin.

Valley’s Board of Directors should consider “asking” Meyers for her resignation, along with that of other top admin. Meyers and her mgmt group have damaged the good name of Valley Hospital with their employees, within the Ridgewood Community, throughout Bergen County and State-wide. In my own corporate experience this should not and would not be tolerated. Interesting that someone who spoke on behalf of Valley last night made the point that Valley is already financial decline. There should be an immediate management shake-up at Valley.

Another point is there should be an investigation into Valley’s non-profit status since they’ve identified the town-wide survey as a “community outreach” towards their non-profit tax exemption.

Finally, I could not be more proud of our Village Council! We all tend to complain when something gets bungled but these meetings were conducted in a professional and considerate manner. Council members asked smart questions that elicited information vital to the future of Ridgewood. As elected officials they truly represented the people of the Village! Thank you to each of our Council members and Have a Very Happy Thanksgiving!

>CBO: Stimulus hurts economy in the long run

>CBO: Stimulus hurts economy in the long run
By Stephen Dinan-The Washington Times

The Congressional Budget Office on Tuesday downgraded its estimate of the benefits of President Obama’s 2009 stimulus package, saying it may have sustained as few as 700,000 jobs at its peak last year and that over the long run it will actually be a net drag on the economy.

CBO said that while the Recovery Act boosted the economy in the short run, the extra debt that the stimulus piled up “crowds out” private investment and “will reduce output slightly in the long run — by between 0 and 0.2 percent after 2016.”

The analysis confirms what CBO predicted before the stimulus passed in February 2009, though the top-end decline of two tenths of a percent is actually deeper than the agency predicted back then.

Bill approved to remedy NJ Transit parking problems at train stations

The Senate Transportation Committee Monday approved legislation designed to remedy problems surrounding overcrowded parking at NJ Transit train stations.

The bill (S-2968.A-1080) would make clear that a vacant permit parking space at the stations is available for general public use during off-peak times. Off-peak hours are described as between 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the weekdays, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Often commuters without permit parking are forced to park in permit-only parking areas and receive citations.

The measure moves to the Senate floor for a vote. It passed the Assembly in June.
“In many cases, the NJ Transit lots are largely reserved for permit parking by daily commuters and that’s understandable, but there’s no reason why these spots shouldn’t be open for general public use during nights and weekends,” Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer), the lower house sponsor, said.   (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom)

>Bridgewater crackdown on handicap parking cheats leads to hundreds of tickets worth $163,000

>Bridgewater crackdown on handicap parking cheats leads to hundreds of tickets worth $163,000

BRIDGEWATER — They thought they were smart, but the police got smarter.

Police in this Somerset County town, home to one of the state’s largest shopping malls, have issued a record number of parking tickets this year to drivers faking their way into handicap spaces by using state-issued hang tags that belonged to dead relatives.

The crime isn’t new, but this level of enforcement is — and the court expects to collect fines worth up to $163,000, and counting.

Police Chief Richard J. Borden described the crackdown as a community service and the policing has won the praise of a prominent Central Jersey disability advocate.

The ticket blitz also has become something of a cash cow for the municipality.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

As hearings on The Dayton, the recently proposed apartment complex on South Broad Street, continued at the Ridgewood Planning Board, more specific questions have emerged concerning the extensive structure’s potential impact on the surrounding community.

In October, Garden Homes Development presented the board with requests for rezoning and an amendment to the village Master Plan to permit the construction of a 120-unit upscale apartment complex on the former Brogan Cadillac lot at the west end of the downtown area. It is one of two applications for multi-family housing complexes around the Central Business District currently at the planning board level of review, with the second proposed for Chestnut Street.

Screening Still a Pain at Airports, Fliers Say
By SUSAN STELLIN
Published: November 21, 2011

The lines will still be long and the screening still invasive at airport checkpoints this Thanksgiving.

While the government has made some changes to security procedures, many passengers and travel executives contend that the moves do not go far enough.

Since last November, the Transportation Security Administration has adopted a policy to reduce pat-downs of children 12 and under, altered some body scanners to display a generic outline of a human figure and begun testing programs that offer expedited screening to pilots and select frequent fliers.

Still, some travelers are bothered by a screening process that has become increasingly time-consuming and intimate, and industry representatives say they are worried that these frustrations are contributing to a decline in air travel.

The Air Transport Association expects 2 percent fewer people will fly this Thanksgiving week compared with last year, while AAA projects a 4 percent increase in automobile travel.

New leak of hacked global warming scientist emails: A ‘smoking gun’ proving a conspiracy – or just hot air?

‘We’re choosing periods to show warming’

‘Science is being manipulated – it might not be too clever in the long run’

‘Climate change is a “better label” than global warming’

‘Many thanks for your paper – and congratulations for reviving global warming’

A huge number of emails between the world’s leading climate scientists was dumped online today, in an apparent attempt to cause disruption in advance of next week’s climate change conference in Durban.

The leak echoes the ‘climategate’ leaks of hacked private emails three years ago which prompted government enquiries into the working practices of climate scientists
