Obama’s “Forced” Keystone Decision Rejects Jobs, Energy, and Logic
Nicolas LorisJanuary 18, 2012 at 4:36 pm

President Obama’s politically intoned decision to reject TransCanada’s permit application to construct a 1,700-mile pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to Texas refineries sent a clear message that special interest demands are of more importance than more energy and much-needed job creation.
Building the pipeline would bring over 700,000 barrels of oil per day and directly create 20,000 truly shovel-ready jobs. The Canadian Energy Research Institute estimates that current pipeline operations and the addition of the Keystone XL pipeline would create 179,000 American jobs by 2035.

Since TransCanada and Nebraska politicians have agreed to reroute the pipeline, the focus should now be on completing the reroute design and beginning construction. Congress should recognize the findings in the State Department’s “Final Environmental Impact Statement” and authorize the application submitted by TransCanada in September 2008.

Given the need for jobs and more oil on the global market to offset high prices, the permit application had been moving along positively with bipartisan support without much attention until environmental activists made blocking the Keystone XL pipeline their issue to rally around for 2011. Although President Obama and the Department of State (DOS) said they’d make a decision at the end of 2011, they ultimately catered to a narrow set of special interests, punting the decision until after the 2012 elections.

>Devolve Transportation Spending to States

>Devolve Transportation Spending to States
By Daniel Horowitz
Jan 19, 2012 Issues: Constitution

One of the numerous legislative deadlines that Congress will be forced to confront this session is the expiration of the 8th short-term extension of the 2005 surface transportation authorization law (SAFETEA-LU).  With federal transportation spending growing beyond its revenue source, an imbalance between donor and recipient states, inefficient and superfluous construction projects popping up all over the country, and burdensome mass transit mandates on states, it is time to inject some federalism into transportation spending.

Throughout the presidential campaign, many of the candidates have expressed broad views of state’s rights, while decrying the expansion of the federal government.  In doing so, some of the candidates have expressed the conviction that states have the right to implement tyranny or pick winners and losers, as long as the federal government stays out of it.  Romneycare and state subsidies for green energy are good examples.  The reality is that states don’t have rights; they certainly don’t have the power to impose tyranny on citizens by forcing them to buy health insurance or regulating the water in their toilet bowels – to name a few.  They do, however, reserve powers under our federalist system of governance to implement legitimate functions of government.  A quintessential example of such a legitimate power is control over transportation and infrastructure spending.

The Highway Trust Fund was established in 1956 to fund the Interstate Highway System (IHS).  The fund, which is administered by the DOT’s Federal Highway Administration, has been purveyed by the federal gasoline tax, which now stands at 18.4 cents per gallon (24.4 for diesel fuel).  Beginning in 1983, Congress began siphoning off some of the gas tax revenue for the great liberal sacred cow; the urban mass transit system.  Today, mass transit receives $10.2 billion in annual appropriations, accounting for a whopping 20% of transportation spending.  Additionally, the DOT mandates that states use as much as 10% of their funding for all sorts of local pork projects, such as bike paths and roadside flowers.

As a result of the inefficiencies and wasteful mandates of our top-down approach to transportation spending, trust fund outlays have exceeded its revenue source by an average of $12 billion per year, even though the IHS – the catalyst for the gasoline tax – has been completed for 20 years.  In 2008, the phantom trust fund was bailed out with $35 billion in general revenue, and has been running a deficit for the past few years.  Congress has not passed a 6-year reauthorization bill since 2005, relying on a slew of short-term extensions, the last of which is scheduled to expire on March 31.

MPAA Directly & Publicly Threatens Politicians Who Aren’t Corrupt Enough To Stay Bought
from the sickening dept

Reinforcing the fact that Chris Dodd really does not get what’s happening, and showing just how disgustingly corrupt the MPAA relationship is with politicians, Chris Dodd went on Fox News to explicitly threaten politicians who accept MPAA campaign donations that they’d better pass Hollywood’s favorite legislation… or else:

“Those who count on quote ‘Hollywood’ for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who’s going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don’t ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don’t pay any attention to me when my job is at stake,”

This certainly follows what many people assumed was happening, and fits with the anonymous comments from studio execs that they will stop contributing to Obama, but to be so blatant about this kind of corruption and money-for-laws politics in the face of an extremely angry public is a really, really, really tone deaf response from Dodd.

TOY HUNTERS
11 tonight
Travel Channel

Whether they’re about storage-unit auctions, pawn shops or people who scour the country for hidden treasures, cable’s hottest shows right now all have a common theme — what Ridgewood toy and collectibles dealer Jordan Hembrough calls “found money.”

Hembrough is about to become part of the genre. His “Toy Hunters” debuts tonight.

“It’s ‘American Pickers’ meets ‘Toy Story,’ ” says Hembrough, owner and president of Hollywood Heroes, a company he runs from his Ridgewood home. “Everyone around the country has the potential of what I like to call ‘toy gold’ hidden in their attic. With the advent of all these new picker shows now, everyone likes the found money, and no one’s really covering toys. And the fact is … whether they had children who moved out of the house or they had them from when they were children, everyone has toys and can relate to all this stuff.”

Resolution to Eliminate the Vote on the Annual Budget and to Move the Election Of School Board Members to the General Election in November

Whereas,
P.L. 2011, c.202 S-3148 provides that a local school district may adopt a resolution to eliminate the vote on its annual school budget that is within the statutory cap imposed by the State of New Jersey, and the above legislation provides that the above action would require districts to hold their annual election for school board members in November during the regular general election, and the Ridgewood Board of Education has determined that the statutory restrictions on the local levy tax increase for annual school appropriations is appropriate and sufficient to control and maintain a thorough and efficient education for the children of Ridgewood, and the Ridgewood Board of Education, consistent with the budgetary restrictions expressed above, believes that dispensing with annual school budget votes will save taxpayer dollars, and the Ridgewood Board of Education believes that school board member elections in November will attract a far greater number of voters than typically vote in April elections, and the Ridgewood Board of education believes that the elimination of the vote on the school budget and the movement of the board member election to November is in the best interest of the Ridgewood community, and the Ridgewood Board of Education understands that this decision shall remain in effect for a minimum of four years, Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Ridgewood Board of Education does hereby determine that it will eliminate the vote on its annual school budget which shall be within the statutory cap and become effective for the 2012-13 budget, and Be It Further Resolved, that the Ridgewood Board of Education does hereby determine that the election of school board members will occur at the annual general election in November, 2012.

Obama’s Magic Kingdom of Joblessness
Mike Brownfield January 20, 2012 at 10:13 am

Yesterday in Walt Disney World, the land “where dreams come true,” President Barack Obama appeared before Cinderella’s Castle to announce his latest plan to boost jobs in America–an effort to increase tourism to the United States. His announcement came one day after he flat out said “NO” to another plan that would have directly created at least 20,000 truly shovel-ready jobs–and 179,000 American jobs by 2035–while bringing more than 700,000 barrels of oil to the United States each day. That plan was the Keystone XL pipeline.

Had the President approved Keystone, a 1,700-mile pipeline would have been extended from Alberta, Canada, to Texas refineries — lifting up the U.S. economy with private-sector investment, putting people to work, and helping increase the supply of energy to lower prices when fuel costs are through the roof. Despite a finding by the State Department that the pipeline would pose minimal environmental risk, environmentalists were still up in arms and lobbied the President to say no to the plan.

The President’s decision is so out of line with fact and reason that The Washington Post strongly condemned it in an op-ed yesterday, saying the “pipeline rejection is hard to accept” and “We almost hope this was a political call because, on the substance, there should be no question.” As the Post explained, even without the pipeline, Canada will still export its oil–but across the ocean to China, instead. Meanwhile, the United States will continue importing crude oil from the Middle East. In other words, the environmental lobby might have stanched the flow of oil from Canada, but it’s being diverted onto the seas, and fossil fuel consumption will necessarily continue.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

With the first substantial snowfall since October expected this weekend, officials and village staff are preparing street services to address ice and snow on Ridgewood’s roads.

Compared to the unexpected pre-Halloween weekend snowstorm, which caused widespread street closings and power outages, expectations are that this weekend’s snow will be much less severe. Current forecasts place the total accumulation between 2 and 5 inches, with snowfall expected to begin late Friday night and continue into Saturday, ending in the afternoon.

>Canada Pledges to Sell Oil to Asia After Obama Rejects Keystone Pipeline

>Canada Pledges to Sell Oil to Asia After Obama Rejects Keystone Pipeline
By Theophilos Argitis and Jeremy Van Loon – Jan 19, 2012 2:14 PM ET

President Barack Obama’s decision yesterday to reject a permit for TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL oil pipeline may prompt Canada to turn to China for oil exports.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in a telephone call yesterday, told Obama “Canada will continue to work to diversify its energy exports,” according to details provided by Harper’s office. Canadian Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver said relying less on the U.S. would help strengthen the country’s “financial security.”

The “decision by the Obama administration underlines the importance of diversifying and expanding our markets, including the growing Asian market,” Oliver told reporters in Ottawa.
