Ridgewood NJ, a recent reader comment alleging an ongoing & well known violation of Village zoning regulations prompted us to check out Ridgewood’s current zoning rules pertaining to the operation of a for gain enterprise (a commercial business) within a Residence District.
Here’s what we found out.
What’s permitted:
- Private schools for kindergarten through grade 12
- Family day-care homes
No other for gain activities are currently permitted; none. [Note: We understand there may be a dozen or so professional offices located in Residence Districts that have been “grandfathered” in place.]
However, home offices are permitted, provided: “the permitted home office shall not be visited by customers or clients and shall only be visited by persons making routine deliveries or service calls to service the permitted equipment.”
So, there you have it. If one of your neighbors is conducting a business for profit (that is, not just working remotely from home), particularly one in which persons are routinely visiting his/her home, they’re most likely in violation of current zoning regulations.
But, don’t worry. If you’re connected, you’ll never get a knock on your door.
Been happening for years in my neighborhood. The individual has protection now.

People have no respect for their neighbors, with respect to setbacks.
Some new transplant just put a 20 foot tall jungle gym in the front yard in violation of the setbacks and nothing has been done.
Cars are parked on lawns just like Paterson.

It WOULD be useful for the town to have a decent website where violations could be reported, and properly addressed. Its not fair to those who keep their property clean to have disrespectful neighbors who don’t comply.
How about the inconsiderate hedge owners who block the view at a corner? Do we have to wait for an accident to get the town off their ass to enforce the rules?
If people had any respect for neighbors these ordinances would be unnecessary

The neighbor behind me just put in a 20′ tall LED light pole which lights up my house so his drunken teens can play basketball into the wee hours of th morning.
Neighbor across the street leaves 4-5 nasty looking garbage cans in the front of his house for the entire world to see because he doesn’t want the sanitation workers to invade his side yard (its a busy street . . . beautiful house that looks like hell because of the gross cans and garbage).
And yet, if either neighbor told you what to do with your property, you’d most likely have a fit.
It appears the poster makes reference to INCONSIDERATE neighbors. Lighting that invades a neighbors property is ILLEGAL. We pay for rear yard garbage pickup so it doesnt look like Paterson.
Rear yard garbage pick up is ridiculous.
If you like garbage cans decorating the street, go to waldwick or midland park. You are likely a new yorker used to feeding the rats, Its one of the few nice things that differeniates us from Paterson. That fake emergency-covid-on-the curb was a gift to the workers who got to go home early every day since they are paid for ‘task work’ not by the hour.
The Music Man?
Pretty soon it’s gonna look like Midlandpark, with trailers motorhomes, boats parked on the front lawn. They look like real hillbillies. It looks so tacky. At least some of the residents trie to hide there motorhomes in the back of their house.?
Ridgewood is so tacky with all the try-hards and posturing, it’s embarrassing.

I just find it funny when you’re driving through Midlandpark and you seeing a motorhomes, boats pick up trucks parked on the front lawn, what is this? They drive around with is expensive pick up trucks thinking they’re driving a Lincoln not
What about a very active business in a park in a residential neighborhood surrounded by homes that bring in over 25 plus cars a day and buses? Back door deal? Active 6 days a week and night time
The moderator of Ridgewood Moms and Dads runs a business from his home. Teaches private music lessons. And yet he is judge and jury as to who can belong to the page and who can post.
