Ridgewood NJ, Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowl kicker and RHS alumni Younghoe Koo had his first encounter with a football not until middle school. Born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1994, Koo’s upbringing centered around soccer, and he even clinched victory in a regional kicking competition in Korea.

Reflecting on the limited presence of football in Korea, Koo shared in an interview on the Falcons’ podcast “Bud Brought a Buddy” with linebacker Bud Dupree that soccer and baseball took precedence over football.

It wasn’t until Koo moved to Ridgewood, in the sixth grade to live with his mother, who had relocated to the U.S. for nursing, that he laid eyes on a football for the first time. Recounting the pivotal moment during lunch at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, Koo revealed that fellow students, aware of his soccer prowess, handed him a football and encouraged him to kick it. This unexpected introduction marked the beginning of Koo’s journey into the world of American football.

  1. So much for the ; “nobody from Ridgewood can go pro”. What a great athlete he is.

  2. Congratulations to Younghoe. We are all very proud of you. A quick note to the editors: your headline is incorrect — please brush-up on your Latin. “Alumni” is plural for “alumnus.” Literally, via your headline, Youghoe is more than one person.
