Rutherford NJ, Bergen County is making a significant investment in recreation and sustainability, improving parks and green spaces. A major highlight of this funding is the transformation of the Carlton Hill Rail Trail, a 1.2-mile stretch running through East Rutherford and Rutherford, into a scenic greenway for walking, jogging, and biking.

Carlton Hill Rail Trail: From Rail Corridor to Scenic Greenway

The largest portion of the funding—$2.69 million—will go toward converting the abandoned Norfolk Southern rail corridor into a picturesque greenway. The trail will connect the Passaic River to nearby downtowns, enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities in southern Bergen County.

“This project demonstrates our dedication to preserving open spaces and creating sustainable recreational opportunities,” said Bergen County Commissioner Vice Chairman Steven Tanelli.

The rail line, originally purchased for $1.9 million, received a reimbursement for half the cost from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

More Improvements at Memorial Park

The greenway will complement existing amenities at Memorial Park, which include:

  • Athletic fields
  • Tennis courts
  • Playgrounds
  • A community garden

Bergen County officials envision the transformation as a significant boost for the local environment, community health, and recreational access.

Inclusive Playground at Pascack Brook County Park

In addition to the Carlton Hill Rail Trail, Westwood’s Pascack Brook County Park will receive funding for an inclusive playground. The DEP Green Acres Program will match $1 million to create a play space featuring:

  • Adaptive play equipment
  • Safety surfaces
  • Quiet zones for sensory-sensitive children
  • Enhanced lighting, walkways, and accessible parking

“Construction of the playground is set to begin this year,” said Bergen County Executive James Tedesco. “These investments reflect Bergen County’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all our residents.”

Why This Matters

Bergen County’s initiatives aim to improve environmental sustainability and expand recreational access for residents of all abilities. Whether it’s the scenic Carlton Hill Greenway or the inclusive playground in Westwood, these projects prioritize health, community, and the preservation of natural spaces.

  1. Really ? I thought the goal was to pave over and build on every square inch of land.😄

    1. You’re just hilarious.

  2. RICH and STUPID

    …and they know it

  3. How about fixing the hundreds of depressed manhole covers all over the county. Every one of these you hit (Franklin Tpke (entire length)., the years-old beauty at the bend on Wycfoff Ave, and dozens of others) are ALL COUNTY ROADS. Their Dept. of Public Works, specifically Thomas Connolly who heads it, sucks. They do not maintain the roads, at all.
