Hackensack NJ, a letter calling out veterans for relying too much on “government handouts” sent to veterans by the director of the Bergen County Division of Veterans Services is a fake, county officials say.
Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco said, “This is a shameful and disgusting attempt to malign the critical work our County Veteran Services Office does every single day. Know that the matter is being investigated and our Veterans Services Office is always there to assist those who served our great nation. Please don’t ever hesitate to reach out to our Bergen County Veterans Services team at 201-336-6325.”
Bergen County Veterans Services issued the following statement on Facebook:
Important Message:
It has been brought to the attention of the County that a fraudulent letter dated March 13, 2023 (on fake County letterhead) has been circulating through the Veterans Community over the last few days. The letter appears to be issued by the Division of Veterans Services here in the County. That is not the case. The letter is a most erroneous misrepresentation that seeks to destroy the excellent reputation our Division of Veterans Services enjoys.
Due to the serious nature of this violation, the County has commenced an investigation in an effort to locate and punish the perpetrator. No one has the right to misappropriate the use of the County Seal or our Stationary. On behalf of the County we apologize for any distress this fraudulent communication may have brought to you.
Rest assured that the County Executive and the entire Bergen County Administration takes our responsibility to the Veterans Community in Bergen County very seriously. We have an excellent staff lead by an Army Veteran, Division Director Shaun Hutchinson. While the letter that is circulating is an absolute fraud, it has alarmed those Veterans who have received it. The individual who sent it should be ashamed of the stress they have caused to active Military and/or our Veterans who have served our Country so well.
I write to assure you that Bergen County will continue to provide the highest level of service available through our Division of Veterans Services located here on the second floor of One Bergen County Plaza. You can reach them at 201-336-6325. You will find them ready to assist at all times.
Sincerely,
Thomas Duch
County Administrator

Hmm, if fraudulent letter was signed, that’s forgery, too.
