Ridgewood NJ, as the debate over immigration enforcement heats up, the tension between federal and state governments is nearing a boiling point. President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, has issued a pointed warning to sanctuary city leaders, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, regarding their efforts to block federal deportation operations.
A Bold Warning Amid Looming Mass Deportations
During a visit to the southern border, Homan made his stance clear, accusing sanctuary jurisdictions of undermining federal law. He warned, “It is a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal illegal immigrants from immigration authorities. Don’t test us.”
This comes as the incoming administration prepares for mass deportations targeting individuals with final removal orders. Homan’s remarks signal a no-tolerance approach toward local leaders who resist federal immigration enforcement.
Murphy’s Sanctuary State Policies Under Fire
Governor Murphy has been a vocal supporter of sanctuary state policies, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These policies aim to protect immigrant communities from what Murphy calls “overreach” by federal authorities.
In a recent statement, Murphy doubled down on his commitment, declaring, “We will fight to the death to protect our immigrant communities.” Critics argue, however, that these policies provide a shield for individuals with final deportation orders, complicating federal efforts to enforce immigration laws.
Legal Consequences for Resistance?
Homan hinted that state and local leaders obstructing federal operations could face legal repercussions. Citing federal statutes, he noted, “Harboring a fugitive is a federal crime,” and suggested that actions preventing deportation could result in arrests.
While federal law grants the government exclusive authority over immigration enforcement, states and cities retain the right to determine the role of their law enforcement agencies. Previous court rulings have upheld local policies limiting cooperation with ICE, but Homan’s comments suggest a potential escalation in federal efforts to challenge sanctuary jurisdictions.
What’s Next in the Federal-State Standoff?
This dispute highlights the deep divide between the Trump administration’s hardline immigration agenda and states like New Jersey, which have adopted more protective measures for immigrant communities. With Homan’s comments sparking further debate, the coming months may see legal battles over the scope of federal authority and state rights.

Arrest him and throw him in jail. Amazing that he would take a stand for illegals, but pleas from nj residents for lower property taxes go unheeded. POS!
Your leaves aren’t going to blow themselves.
Murphy needs to go!
I thought obstruction of justice was a crime?
This is a joke. Federal law is supposed to supersede state law. If state refuses to comply then this is the perfect example of the enemy within. How can you go against your own government that was elected by the people? There has to be accountability for those governors or mayors who are willingly obstructing the federal government. Homan probably doesn’t have the power but there must be other mechanisms through as DOJ or AG that may ensure that the law is upheld.
Listen to you. Hey, I hear the Stazi is hiring. Maybe you could give us all some tips on rooting out all these internal enemies. I bet we could put your carpentry skills to work on erecting all the new public gallows we’ll be needing.
And if federal law is sposduh supersede state law, then there’s no need to have states at all. Wait till the-law-that-must-not-be-questioned starts enforcing things you don’t like.
We dont need anymore illegals. Send em back to mexico. They broke the law. and now we pay for it. Phil Murphy is a traitor opening our state up to people who dont belong here. THey get money housing food stamps drivers licenses. While alot of us are out here providing for our loved ones and trying to make it in life, these illegals and these corrupt leaders take from us to give to them. new jerseys a dying state in alot of places especially around the city. i dont know how much more i can take of bergen co .
