Ridgewood NJ, Christie Todd Whitman, the former New Jersey Governor and EPA Administrator, is now speaking out against sweeping downsizing to the Environmental Protection Agency. But let’s be real—is she kidding?

Whitman Slams Trump’s EPA Cuts—But Should She?

In a recent interview, Whitman called President Donald Trump’s environmental rollbacks “unconscionable.” She warned that cutting regulations would worsen air and water pollution, putting lives at risk.

“I mean, people are dying because of air and water pollution,” she said, cautioning that reducing EPA oversight could have severe consequences.

The irony? This is the same Christie Todd Whitman who, days after the 9/11 attacks, assured the public that the air near Ground Zero was safe to breathe—a claim that proved catastrophically false.

Whitman’s EPA & the 9/11 Air Quality Disaster

Shortly after the World Trade Center collapse, the EPA, under Whitman’s leadership, reassured New Yorkers that there was no significant health risk from the dust and debris. This claim was later debunked:

🔹 EPA’s Own Inspector General found that the agency lacked sufficient data to make such a claim.
🔹 Air samples contained asbestos levels double or triple the danger limit.
🔹 The Bush White House edited EPA statements to make them sound less alarming.
🔹 Thousands of first responders developed severe respiratory illnesses, with an estimated 13,000–27,000 deaths linked to the toxic air exposure.

Despite mounting evidence, Whitman stood by her statements, insisting she was referring to Lower Manhattan as a whole, not Ground Zero.

The Hypocrisy Is Staggering

Now, Whitman wants to lecture Trump’s EPA Chief, Lee Zeldin, about environmental dangers? Sure, gutting the EPA has it challenges, but coming from her, it’s a tough pill to swallow.

If she truly cared about air quality, maybe she should have been more honest in 2001—when first responders’ lives were at stake.

Whitman’s 9/11 legacy proves one thing: when it comes to public health and environmental safety, her credibility is long gone.

What do you think? Does Whitman have any right to criticize today’s EPA rollbacks, or is this just a case of selective outrage? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Who really cares what she says. She is irrelevant

  2. She has some nerve criticizing the EPA . This is the same woman who told people in NYC on 9/11 and months after that the air was safe. Really Christie? Did you ever take responsibility for the misinformation you gave the American public?

    1. Wow, that’s what the article was all about🤔

  3. Exactly she’s in a political hack, just like some of the fools that are in Ridgewood recording the contaminated soil on the west Saddle River park, they don’t give two shits about homeowners or employees that were working and living close to the contamination. They don’t care. if they gave a shit they would’ve reached out they should be ashamed of themselves, especially the ex manager and director of engineering and Dpw, two idiots. They are full of shit the eye behind the village Attorney they must have a lot of dirt on the town to keep their jobs. People must be really stupid. Good luck at this mayor council, and some of the management where they find this idiots. And how do they keep them employed, how do they condone this. Ridgewood is a laughing joke of BERGEN County. 1. So, we should be concerned about contaminated soil pr water anywhere, but the levels at Schedler are quite modest. It needs to be cleaned up, for certain. It was not done deliberately by ‘idiots’. True, the employees need to be looked after, and I think they can make that decision on their own. They are grownups. I can tell from the same poor writing skills, the name-calling, the use of profanity, and the consistent theme that this is the same writer as other similar writings here. I suggest you pick on some other issue and give this one a break. It and you are getting old. Ridgewood is not being laughed at, families love to live here. May I respectfully suggest you read your posts before hitting the “Post Comment” button. There are so many typos and partial phrases that they are often difficult to understand. This is not the hill to die on because it’s not that important, except to you, obviously. Maybe post before you start drinking for the day?
