  1. Driving a car can be dangerous. Irresponsible operation of a motor vehicle can injure or kill the operator, or others in close proximity. It is for this reason that the privilege of driving is just that: a privilege, not a right. One must demonstrate that one is capable of operating a motor vehicle, and that one understands the rules associated with doing so.

    Replace “driving a car” with “owning a gun” and the sentence makes just as much sense.
