Hackensack NJ, Costco has announced new measures to crack down on non-members shopping at their stores. The retail giant will soon require customers to scan their membership cards upon entering, a change from the previous system where shoppers only had to present their cards at checkout.

According to a statement on Costco’s website, scanning devices will be installed at store entrances “over the coming months.” All members will need to scan their physical or digital membership cards by placing the barcode or QR code against the scanner before being allowed to shop.

If a membership card is inactive, expired, or if a customer needs to sign up for a new membership, a Costco employee at the entrance will direct them to the membership counter before they can access the rest of the store. Additionally, all guests must be accompanied by a current member to enter.

Costco also stated that customers should be prepared to show valid photo identification if their photo is not on the membership card. The company encourages members to visit the membership counter to have their picture taken for their card if needed.

This new requirement follows Costco’s recent announcement of its first membership price hike since 2017. Starting September 1, the basic Gold Star Membership will increase by $5 to $65 per year, while the annual Executive Membership will rise from $120 to $130.

Costco operates over 600 warehouse locations across the United States, including 21 in New Jersey. North Jersey stores include locations in East Hanover, Wharton, Wayne, Clifton, Hackensack, and Teterboro.

  1. This will cause a slowdown at the door. I have seen this on ticket lines before. We are not employees. Look at the self checkout line. There is no standard User Interface. And the technology is not perfect
