WASHINGTON DC, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of social media platform X, called for the arrest and prosecution of Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday. This demand followed the National Institutes of Health (NIH) admission to Congress that it had funded risky “gain-of-function” research in Wuhan, China, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
During a House subcommittee hearing, NIH principal deputy director Lawrence Tabak admitted that the U.S. government had funded dangerous research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This research involved modifying bat coronaviruses shortly before the COVID-19 outbreak in late 2019.
Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.) of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic questioned Tabak, “Dr. Tabak, did NIH fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology through [Manhattan-based nonprofit] EcoHealth [Alliance]?” Tabak responded, “It depends on your definition of gain-of-function research. If you’re speaking about the generic term, yes, we did.”
This revelation stands in contrast to Fauci’s testimony to Congress in May 2021, where he stated, “The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”
While Musk did not specify the criminal charges Fauci should face, perjury and lying to Congress are possible charges recommended by congressional Republicans. Both offenses carry penalties of up to five years in prison and have a five-year statute of limitations. Other potential charges could emerge from the alleged cover-up of U.S. funding for the Chinese labs suspected of unleashing COVID-19, which has caused significant loss of life and widespread economic, social, and educational disruptions.
Fauci served as President Biden’s chief medical adviser in 2021 and 2022 and led NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 through the end of 2022. Initially viewed as a guiding figure during the pandemic, Fauci’s credibility has been questioned due to inconsistent advice, particularly regarding mask-wearing.
In late 2021, documents published by the Intercept revealed that EcoHealth Alliance used grants from Fauci’s agency to fund experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. These experiments modified three bat coronaviruses, making them more infectious in “humanized” mice when human-type receptors were added to them.
Recently, the Department of Health and Human Services, which includes NIH, barred EcoHealth from receiving federal funding for three years due to these findings.
The origins of COVID-19 remain uncertain, largely due to China’s refusal to permit an independent international investigation. Several U.S. government entities, including the FBI and the Energy Department, believe the pandemic may have originated from a lab leak in China. President Biden has remained relatively quiet on the issue, while former President Donald Trump has suggested that China should pay $10 trillion in “reparations” for the pandemic.
