New York NY, on Wednesday evening, the commute home was abruptly halted for many travelers due to downed overhead power lines. Both Amtrak and New Jersey Transit (NJT) experienced significant service disruptions, with only limited operations resuming late into the night.
Service disruptions started around 5:30 p.m. Amtrak officials say it’s due to downed overhead power lines in the area. NJ Transit service is also suspended between New York and Metropark. All Amtrak trains between Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station and New York’s Penn Station were temporarily stopped.
Service Updates
At 9:30 p.m., Amtrak announced that power had been restored on one track between New York and Newark, allowing for “minimal travel.” However, NJT advised its customers to “standby for Amtrak to resume rail service.”
- Northeast Corridor Line: Suspended in both directions between Penn Station New York and Metropark.
- North Jersey Coastline: Suspended in both directions between Penn Station New York and Long Branch.
- Raritan Valley Line: Suspended in both directions.
- Midtown Direct Service: Diverted to Hoboken.
Alternative Travel Options
NJT rail tickets and passes were being cross-honored on NJT buses, private carriers, and PATH services at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken, and 33rd Street-New York. For alternative service information, NJT customers can visit njtransit.com/abc.

Impact on Commuters
Both commuters heading home during the evening rush and fans traveling to the New York Rangers playoff hockey game at Madison Square Garden were left scrambling to find alternative routes. The extensive delays began just after 5:30 p.m. when Amtrak announced the suspension of all travel between Newark and New York Penn Station due to the power line issues.
Crews are actively working to clear the tracks, but Amtrak has not provided an estimate for when full service will resume. NJT customers should anticipate possible delays and cancellations today due to residual impacts from the previous evening’s service disruption.
For the latest updates and service information, NJT customers are encouraged to check the NJ Transit website and social media channels.
