Fair Lawn NJ, After a year of uncertainty shrouding the future of the historic Nabisco factory in Fair Lawn, borough officials have finally broken their silence, revealing that the iconic building will soon be demolished.
In a recent update, the borough announced that demolition at the Nabisco site is expected to resume shortly, pending state approval.
According to Fair Lawn Mayor Gail Rottenstrich, the developer seeking to replace the aging bakery with a modern warehouse has received approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection to proceed with the dismantling process. However, no specific date has been provided for when demolition will commence, according to Borough Manager Kurt Peluso.
The news comes nearly a year after a planned implosion of the Nabisco tower was abruptly postponed amid concerns raised by neighbors about potential asbestos exposure and other contaminants being released into the air. Greek Real Estate Partners, the current property owner, ultimately scrapped the implosion plan in May, pledging to clear the site using a non-explosive method.
Last year’s postponement and subsequent cancellation of the implosion sparked conflicting explanations from officials, with some attributing the delays to permit issues while others cited the need for additional time to address asbestos removal.
