Glen Rock, NJ, the growing issue of check theft from local mailboxes has reached a troubling new point, with two recent reports confirming that checks were stolen directly from the mailbox located in front of the Glen Rock Post Office.
According to Glen Rock Police Chief Dean Ackermann, two residents mailed checks from the Glen Avenue mailbox, both of which were later fraudulently cashed, resulting in a total loss of $23,523.74. The victims have since contacted their banks and reported the fraud.
The incidents occurred nearly a month apart, Chief Ackermann noted — the first check was mailed on January 20, and the second on February 16.
“Over the past several months, numerous reports of this nature have been received concerning checks mailed in both Glen Rock and other area communities,” Ackermann said.
Ongoing Investigation with Federal Authorities
The Glen Rock Police Department is actively working alongside the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to investigate the wave of mailbox thefts and check fraud incidents across the region.
This is part of a broader issue affecting Bergen County and surrounding areas, with multiple communities reporting similar crimes involving stolen, altered, and fraudulently cashed checks.
