Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus officials were disappointed this week when graffiti was discovered on the Warren Avenue Bridge Wednesday, April 19th.
The historic Warren Avenue Bridge, built in 1890, is the oldest of three surviving truss bridges in Bergen County and is listed as a Critical Environmental and Historic site. The bridge, and its surroundings, are situated adjacent to and part of Zabriskie Park, a beautiful and special place that residents enjoy year-round.
A truss bridge is a type of bridge that is constructed using a series of interconnected triangles, or trusses, to support the weight of the bridge and the traffic that passes over it. These trusses are typically made of steel or timber, and they are designed to distribute the weight of the bridge evenly across the supporting piers or abutments. Truss bridges are often used to span long distances, as they are able to support heavy loads without requiring a large amount of material or additional support structures. They are commonly used for railway bridges, highway bridges, and pedestrian bridges.
The DPW were tasked with removing the graffiti on Thursday within 24 hours once the vandalism was discovered. Officials said on Facebook, “We do not tolerate destruction of our public spaces and historic sites.”
