Hackensack NJ, early Thursday morning, the City of Hackensack Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Hackensack University Medical Center. At 6:38 a.m., dispatch received a call from Gamewell box #148 at 30 Prospect Avenue, indicating an activated fire alarm at the medical center. Fire crews from Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 4, Rescue 1, Ladder 1, and Deputy 4 were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters were informed by hospital security of a smoke condition in a supply room. After investigating, it was determined that an electrical buss bar had shorted out, which caused a nearby sprinkler head to activate. Fortunately, the electrical equipment shut down automatically, and the sprinkler system effectively extinguished any remaining hot spots.
The fire was contained to the electrical equipment and a small portion of hospital supplies, with minimal water damage from the sprinkler system. Firefighters isolated the affected sprinkler branch and worked to ventilate any lingering smoke from the area.
Hackensack’s City Fire Prevention team and the City Electrical Inspector arrived to assess the damage and provide guidance on repairs. Hospital staff promptly began cleaning and repairing the affected equipment, with Fire Prevention and the Electrical Inspector scheduled for follow-up inspections.
No injuries were reported, and no evacuations were necessary during the incident, thanks to the swift response and effective safety measures in place at the hospital.

Pardon my ignorance…what is a buss bar?
A small piece of equipment where many pieces of electrical equipment are wired into. Kind of like a power strip, but the items are hard-wired to it, not plugged in.
