Washington DC, in a shocking turn of events, the U.S. Justice Department revealed an alleged Iranian-backed assassination plot aimed at President-elect Donald Trump during his 2024 campaign. Details were unveiled Friday in a newly unsealed criminal complaint against Farhad Shakeri,51, charged with murder-for-hire. Shakeri reportedly admitted to FBI agents that an Iranian official tasked him in September with killing Trump.
The complaint states that Shakeri had previously collaborated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on other assassination attempts against U.S. citizens. However, in September, he was directed to set aside these activities to focus solely on targeting Trump.
“The charges announced today expose Iran’s continued brazen attempts to target U.S. citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump, other government leaders, and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said. He emphasized that the IRGC—a U.S.-designated terrorist organization—has been conspiring with criminal networks to target Americans domestically. “That simply won’t be tolerated,” he added.
This alleged plot follows two previous attempts on Trump’s life earlier in the campaign season. In July, Trump was shot in the ear at a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally, and months later, another individual was apprehended with a firearm near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. Though there is no confirmed evidence linking these incidents to a larger scheme, federal officials have repeatedly warned Trump about Iran’s intentions.
“There are few actors in the world that pose as grave a threat to the national security of the United States as does Iran,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland, underscoring the seriousness of the threat in his statement.
The criminal complaint offers significant insights into the alleged assassination plan, which, according to the Justice Department, involved a sudden pivot from targeting other Iranian-American journalists and activists to focusing solely on Trump. Shakeri and two other defendants, Carlisle Rivera, 49, and Jonathan Loadholt, 36, now face multiple charges, including murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, and money laundering conspiracy.
This development highlights the extent to which foreign actors, including Iran, are believed to be outsourcing assassination efforts to organized crime networks, adding a new layer of complexity to U.S. national security concerns.
