Livingston NJ, the Livingston Public Schools has announced an early dismissal on April 8th due to the solar eclipse scheduled to occur later that afternoon, as noted on the academic calendar.

In a letter addressed to the school community, Superintendent of Schools Matthew J. Block expressed concerns about student safety during the eclipse, particularly since it coincides with regular dismissal time. Block emphasized the risk of students being outside and unsupervised during the event, potentially exposing themselves to eye damage without proper protection.

The decision to implement the early dismissal was made following approval by the Livingston Board of Education. Elementary schools and the high school will dismiss at noon, while Mount Pleasant and Heritage middle schools will follow suit at 12:45.

While New Jersey may not be in the direct path of the eclipse for optimal viewing, residents can still catch a glimpse, weather permitting. Northern New Jersey is expected to experience around 92% coverage of the eclipse.

It’s crucial to remember not to look directly at the eclipse, as it can cause serious eye damage. Instead, viewers are advised to use protective gear such as eclipse glasses, welder’s glasses, or equipment like telescopes with solar filters. Alternatively, a pinhole projection box can be used for safe viewing.

For those interested in obtaining eclipse glasses, they are available at science centers, department stores, and online shops. According to NASA, the next total eclipse is not expected until August 23, 2044.
