Ridgewood NJ, NASA is preparing contingency plans for Boeing’s Starliner astronauts to potentially return from the International Space Station (ISS) in February 2025. This announcement marks the latest setback in Boeing’s troubled journey to launch its inaugural crewed mission to space.
The Starliner launched on June 5, carrying veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams after a series of delays. Initially planned as a nine-day mission, the Starliner’s stay at the ISS has now extended beyond two months. The mission’s extension is due to ongoing testing amid concerns over helium leaks and thruster control issues. Despite Boeing’s insistence that the capsule is safe to fly, NASA’s announcement reportedly comes amid internal disagreements between the two organizations.
NASA’s contingency plans, which are not yet finalized, would involve Wilmore and Williams returning to Earth via a capsule from SpaceX, Boeing’s competitor. This development is another blow to Boeing, which is already grappling with a series of challenges in its commercial aviation sector.
The future of Boeing’s Starliner program remains uncertain as NASA and Boeing work to resolve the technical issues that have plagued the mission.

I wouldn’t have gone! Boeing needs to be sued by the astronauts and their families!
Dumb comment. Sued?
Won’t they run out of food…or is there a Wilkes nearby…?
They have each other.
But yeah. Good planning on their part. It was a nine day mission but thankfully they planned to have over two month’s worth of food onboard. Ya know. Just in case.
Talking about lost in space, have you seen some of these village employees? They’re definitely lost. Where did they find them? Whose friends are they with To get the job. Amazing. they must be From You know where.
Where?
This program has had issues for years. It needs to be canceled. SpaceX got a later start and has been delivering results for years. Boeing is too distracted with other issues. Starliner may have leaks, but I guess we should feel fortunate that the door did not blow off.
“Boeing is too distracted with other issues.”
Like having bean counters design aircraft rather than AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERS.
