Teacher Charged in Connection with Social Media Threat

Amir Doctry, 45, a former special education teacher in Montclair, has been charged with making terroristic threats after allegedly posting a threat on social media. The threat targeted a specific staff member at Northeast Elementary School, according to the Montclair Police Department.

Doctry, who had been on administrative leave, was taken into custody in Philadelphia at 8 a.m. on Monday. Authorities indicated that additional charges might follow.

In a statement, Montclair police reassured the community, saying, “There is no further danger to our community.” The department also confirmed increased patrols at all district schools as a precautionary measure.

Collaborative Efforts Neutralize the Threat

The Montclair Police Department, in partnership with the Montclair Board of Education, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and FBI, worked throughout the night to identify and address the source of the threat. Interim Superintendent Damen G. Cooper shared updates with the community, emphasizing the district’s proactive measures.

“Through the diligent efforts and collaboration with the Montclair Police Department, the threat we were addressing has been neutralized,” Cooper stated in a morning announcement.

In 2020, he was recognized by the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence for his innovative Global Citizens Project, which connected students with international learning opportunities.

Precautionary School Closures

In a 5 a.m. announcement, Superintendent Cooper informed families of the decision to close schools, citing the district’s commitment to safety. Montclair Mayor Renee Baskerville also reassured the public, stating, “This is a precautionary measure, and there is no immediate threat.”
