Montvale NJ, in a Facebook post ,”Drone Mystery Not Solved but”, Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali commented that several drones were spotted last night over the Montvale and Upper Saddle River areas just around 7PM. While I’m not a drone expert, I do own a small drone that I use as a hobby. It is registered, has a permit, and I am restricted to flying it no higher than 400 feet. Additionally, I must check for any restricted airspace before each flight on an app, and the drone must remain within my line of sight at all times—those are the rules.
I take some comfort in the fact that these drones we saw had their lights on, which to me suggests they are not involved in any malicious activity, as drones on such missions assumingly fly without lights. Also the fact that they are flying in a pattern at night and in early winter, when trees have no leaves, which aligns with land survey practices. Nighttime is preferred for surveys because there is less car traffic and fewer disruptions.
However, I do feel uneasy knowing that we can’t track their frequencies, unless these drones are fully autonomous and using a new frequency range outside the currently allowed limits. That is a problem. They should still be registered and report their location at all times.
During the briefing yesterday, the authorities mentioned that they haven’t contacted the corporate sector yet to see if they are theirs. That is also a problem, what are we waiting for?
One potential solution could be to declare a state of emergency, temporarily grounding all drones. This would allow authorities to track those that remain airborne during this period.
