Newark NJ, On Wednesday, July 12, NJTPD K9 Officer Michael Brown was traveling north on Route 21 in Newark. He saw a violent motorcycle accident unfold. The motorcycle’s operator was ultimately thrown over a guardrail. The operator was severely injured and suffered a large, traumatic chest wound. His rib cage and vital organs were exposed, and he showed signs of a collapsed lung. Officer Brown knew the man would perish without intervention.
Officer Brown radioed for EMS to respond and retrieved medical supplies from his patrol vehicle. Brown called out to the man, assuring him that he was there to help him, and that EMS was on the way.
Brown applied a trauma dressing to the man’s chest and put pressure on his wounds to stop as much bleeding as possible. He continued calmly speaking to the injured man, assuring him that he was going to be okay; and that he was going to see his family members again. Brown rendered aid for nearly 14 minutes before EMS arrived on scene. He continuously encouraged the man to keep fighting and breathing. When the initial EMS unit arrived, Brown assisted in the application of chest seals on the man’s wounds.
Officer Brown’s prompt and alert actions, his calm demeanor, and his administration of life saving first aid, undoubtedly helped to save this man’s life.
