Recently, we received this letter from a passing motorist who witnessed Trooper Jamarr Morris helping a little boy and his two dogs on the Garden State Parkway:

I am writing this letter to inform you of an incident that took place on the southbound side of the New Jersey Garden State Parkway on Monday, August 23 at approximately 2:45 PM in the area of mile marker 112. I was driving home from work. I am a new commuter, and being so new I have become very cognizant of the deer that roam the side of the parkway no matter the time. I try to remain vigilant to their whereabouts, as I know they pose quite a threat of accident.

On this particular day I noticed two dogs and their 8 year old owner running in tow in the woods where these deer typically feed. They were headed directly for the parkway. I had an immediate pit in my stomach! As both a mother and educator, I anticipated that if these dogs ran onto the GSP that the little boy would be quick to follow. And that is exactly what happened! I along with two other motorists slowed the traffic to a dead stop, I know…not the easiest decision to make, nor the best! But the crisis I foresaw was too grim to imagine any other way.

Fortunately Officer Jamar Morris (car 204) was only about 1.5 miles ahead. I believe he was on a recent traffic stop. He must have noticed that the traffic was not moving and he safely turned his vehicle around and returned to the scene which included two loose dogs running all over the GSP, one 8 year old boy who seemed to be in shock who was chasing them, and 5
patient adults who had stopped the traffic and were trying their best to render aid.

Officer Morris quickly and calmly took control of the scene. The young boy was able to only capture one dog. He only had one leash. Officer Morris grabbed the other dog and carried him. I am not sure he even liked dogs. He took the young man to the Trooper vehicle. I could hear him asking the young boy where he lived and what had happened. He scooped them all into the vehicle and safely moved over to the side of the road. The whole incident took less than 5 minutes.

As Officer Morris passed my vehicle all I could say to him was “YOU ARE A HERO!” And maybe we were all heroes that day, right down to the little boy who just didn’t want to lose his dogs. But this was Officer Morris’s scene that day! He took charge of what could have been an incredible tragedy on the Garden State Parkway. That young boy and his pups all put their heads on the pillow safely that night, as did we all!
Life never prepares us for these types of days! We all just lead with our hearts and calmness of mind! As I put my own head on the pillow on that Monday night I really wished I could have had a group hug and a moment with all these individuals.

Thank you Trooper Morris, the concerned citizens that stopped to help, and the motorist who shared this story with us.

  1. There are still a few good people in this world of ours. I thank God for all of them and pray for the others.
