Paramus NJ, congratulations and best wishes to Paramus Police Sergeant Dean Avagnano on his retirement. Sgt. Avagnano who is mostly known for his for his career in the traffic division has also been a major participant in our community events. Always seen chaperoning our LEAD – Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence events and rescuing animals throughout his career. Over the years the Ridgewood blog has profiled Sgt. Avagnano during several animal rescues. Sgt. Avagnano has been a major part of our motor unit and has also installed hundreds of car seats for young parents in town. Thank you for your service Sgt. DEER MATING SEASON IS UNDERWAY

Ridgewood NJ, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection remind motorists to be alert for white-tailed deer as days get shorter and deer become more active with the mating season getting underway. “Deer are involved in thousands of collisions with motor vehicles in New Jersey each year, with the highest number occurring during the fall mating season,” said NJDEP Fish & Wildlife Assistant Commissioner Dave Golden. “It is very important that motorists in all parts of the state be alert to the possibility of deer suddenly darting onto roadways, and to follow some basic guidelines to stay safe. ”Deer are entering the fall mating season, known as the fall rut, and may suddenly sprint onto roadways as bucks actively pursue does.

Park Ridge Police Officers Rescue Fawn from Storm Drain

Park Ridge NJ, every day, Park Ridge Police Officers put on many different hats during their daily duties. Today was no different when we received a call of a week old fawn that was stuck in a storm drain. With the mother doe near by waiting in angst, Officer Giacchi was able to remove the baby fawn from the storm drain. This is just one example of how many different roles our officers take on during their daily patrol functions.

Ridgewood Police Interrupt Deer Date

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police Patrol Officer Michael Karcher was dispatched to the Hopper Ridge Condominium property at approximately Noon on Tuesday, 11/22, in response to a resident’s telephone call reporting a doe trapped in a retention pond area. Assisted by an employee of Tyco Animal Control, Officer Karcher determined that the doe was not trapped, but was hiding in the area due to the presence of a large buck nearby. The doe was able to successfully escape from the area shortly thereafter, with the buck in chase.

Passenger Car Strikes Deer in Glen Rock

Glen Rock NJ, The danger posed by deer living in areas with high volumes of motor vehicle traffic was tragically illustrated in Glen Rock on Sunday afternoon, 10/30 when a Glen Rock Police patrol officer was forced to put down a mortally injured deer who had been struck by passenger vehicle in the 900 block of Maple Avenue. The vehicle’s driver sustained a minor hand injury in the collision, and was treated on the scene by an EMT from the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps. A hydraulic lift tow truck removed the damaged 4-door sedan from the roadway.

DEP, NJDOT WARN MOTORISTS TO DRIVE WITH EXTRA CAUTION AS DEER ACTIVITY INCREASES, DAYLIGHT DECREASES DUE TO EARLIER TWILIGHT

Twp. of Washington NJ motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution and watch for deer at this time of the year. Deer are more likely to suddenly run onto roadways during their mating season, known as the rut, which runs from late October through mid-December in New Jersey. Increased deer activity is more likely to occur in the early morning and around sunset when visibility may be difficult.

Awareness will become even more important when daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 6, causing many commutes to align with the periods when deer are most active.

Bow Season For Deer Opens Saturday, October 29th

Ridgewood NJ, the Permit Bow Season opens Saturday, October 29, and if you have purchased your antlerless deer zone permit but haven’t yet purchased a buck permit for permit bow season, you have until 11:59 p.m. Saturday to do so. The buck permit will still be available with the initial purchase of an antlerless deer zone permit after the season opens.

Bergen County Historical Society : Soap on A Rope Keeps the Deer Away from Your Trees

River Edge Nj, from the Bergen County Historical Society a tip to keep deer away from young trees .To help repel deer, the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Bergen County Historical Society has begun placing soap (Irish Spring) on the younger native trees that line the fences at Historic New Bridge Landing. The scent of the soap prevents deer from eating the leaves of the young trees so in turn, the trees can develop the strength they need as they grow. Ridgewood Police officers successfully reunite a fawn with its mother after the baby become stuck inside of a fenced playground at the Somerville Elementary School

Ridgewood NJ, several Ridgewood Police officers were successful in their joint efforts to reunite a fawn with its mother after the baby become stuck inside of a fenced playground at the Somerville Elementary School on South Pleasant Avenue, Ridgewood, late Thursday afternoon, 06/30. Officers guided the animal out of an open gate within 20 minutes or so after their arrival at the location in response to a telephone call from a concerned citizen. The fawn was seemingly uninjured despite having leaped directly into the chain link fence several times during the “roundup.”
