The Record
Somewhere beyond the sweltering days of heat and humidity is a cool summer night filled with free music, theater and music under the stars.
The Fourth of July fireworks have faded from the sky and given way to the summer concert season, now in full swing in North Jersey. So grab a beach chair and a blanket; chances are you won’t have to go far to find free entertainment on a weeknight.
“How important is it to get out of the house on a Wednesday or Thursday night?” mused Nancy Bigos, deputy director of Parks and Recreation for the Village of Ridgewood. “It’s a great way to spend a summer evening.”
Summer concerts are a long-standing tradition in Ridgewood and many other towns. Ridgewood last week kicked off its 55th season at the Kasschau Memorial Shell with a performance by Bobby Byrne, who delighted a crowd of about 300 with a set of mostly Broadway tunes.
“I can’t believe this has been going on for 55 years,” Byrne said before launching into “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” which had many people clapping along. The sun set, and the only light came from the stage and the citronella candles scattered about the crowd as another outdoor concert season was under way.

The Ridgewood News
Bucky Pizzarelli & Friends will be featured on Thursday, July 21.
John “Bucky” Pizzarelli is one of the best known 7-string players alive.
Pizzarelli has been playing at the Shell every year since 1963 when he moved to Saddle River. His two uncles played banjos at the Shell and Pizzarelli went to listen to them. When they called him to perform he said “yes.”
He began his professional career at 17 when he joined the Vaughn Monroe Band in 1943. Then he went into the service for two years during World War II returning to the Vaughn Monroe Band for five years. After that Pizzarelli went to New York City and became a staff musician at NBC and played the Kate Smith Show. He stayed in New York City doing studio work – mostly recording sessions and played with Benny Goodman, going to Europe on tours four times. Pizzarelli also did the Tonight Show with Skitch Henderson and Doc Severensen while Johnny Carson was host. CDs with Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra followed.
His awards include ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame Induction, June 2005, and Mac Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Pizzarelli has performed at the White House, two performances for President Ronald Reagan and one for President Bill Clinton, and played a private birthday party for Pat Nixon at the Nixon home. His concert at Rutgers University in New Brunswick featuring Bucky, Les Paul, Tal Farlow and Bucky’s son John was aired on New Jersey’s PBS station as part of their three part New Jersey Summerfare Series.
Bucky plays a Benedetto Bucky Pizzarelli Signature 7 string guitar, the additional string providing him with a bass line during performances.

tHE bAND sHELL
“One of the great things about Ridgewood is the band shell. What a nice place to go on a summer night and what a great range of talent performing every year.
So why did the powers that be decide that during this 2 month shell use was the excellent time to ‘fix’ it up?
Who ever screwed up this summer entertainment should be fired. It is a mess at the shell!
I mean this isn’t some complicated decision like should we build a not needed parking garage or allow no tax paying already to big Valley to expand.
This was a very simple decision. Should we fix up the shell during the 2 months it is used or should we do it in May or September.
FIRE WHO EVER MADE THIS DECISION!”
