Black and Latino Public Charter School Students Outperform Their Peers

Results show pandemic-related setbacks statewide in student learning with public charters best positioned to accelerate educational recovery

Hamilton NJ , the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) released statewide assessment scores for the first time in three years due to extensive disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. While there were significant drops statewide, analysis shows that Black and Latino students enrolled in public charter schools in the six largest charter cities are twice as likely to be proficient in English language arts and mathematics compared to their district peers based on 2022 statewide assessment results. This data verifies that public charter schools accelerated student learning for low-income students of color during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic in Newark, Trenton, Paterson, Camden, Jersey City and Plainfield.

New Poll: Majority of New Jersey Voters and Parents Support Public Charter Schools by a 2:1 Margin

Support is even stronger among Black and Latino voters; Trenton, Paterson, Plainfield and Jersey City  parents overwhelmingly support public charter schools

Ridgewood NJ,a new statewide poll from Change Research released today by the New  Jersey Public Charter Schools Association (NJPCSA) found that a majority of voters in New Jersey support  public charter schools by a nearly 2:1 margin (50% of respondents indicated support and 27% indicated  opposition), while parents surveyed have an even higher level of support (56% support and only 24% oppose).  Support for charter schools rises to a nearly 3:1 ratio among Black voters (58% support and only 20% oppose).  Support is also very strong with Latino voters (52% support and only 23% oppose).

Charter School Parents Take On Trenton!

Call on Governor Murphy to Reverse Department of Education’s Charter School Denials and #LetMyChildLearn

TRENTON NJ,  Following February’s denials of high-performing public charter schools, hundreds of parents and students, primarily families of color, from New Jersey’s public charter schools took to the state’s capitol, urging Governor Phil Murphy to direct Acting Department of Education Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan to reverse these harmful decisions and support the growth of high-quality charter schools in New Jersey. Hundreds of parents and students took to the Statehouse Annex, traveling from all across the state, to express their concerns of being uprooted from the schools that best fit their educational needs.
