Ridgewood seeking solutions to parking problems

The Ridgewood Village Council last week defeated an ordinance that would have restored parking on one side of Pomander Walk during the day, but the need for a comprehensive solution to the parking problem in the area remains, according to village officials.

During discussion at the Nov. 9 council meeting, Deputy Mayor Michael Sedon said the council needed to conduct a study that would look at the broader picture in the area, rather than focusing on one or two streets, a sentiment echoed by Councilman Ramon Hache.

Reader say Ridgewood Parking Meter Financial incentives can work to improve things when they are planned carefully

PayByPhone_Meter

When parking was made half price in lots, I made an effort to park in the lots. When street parking cost the same, I began to park on the street again. And there it is. Financial incentives can work to improve things when they are planned carefully. Doubling and tripling parking fees will cause many people to run away. The town cannot survive by catering only to those who don’t think twice about what they spend on items large or small. What we are facing is endless disincentives, like the prospect of having to pay 35 cents for the privilege of paying to park. For me this will never happen and if the meters stop accepting coins the CBD will never have my business again. Add to that the horrors of the single-lane underpass and now the blinding and stupid sign telling me to shop and dine in my town, and I basically avoid downtown to the greatest possible extent.

Readers comment on Parking Problems Near Ridge and other Ridgewood Schools

Parking near any school is out of control in the village and just seems to get worse while on the rare occasion that a police officer is there he or she does nothing.

It is about driving and safety. Buying near a school does not mean that parents can ignore parking/standing rules, blocking driveways and oncoming traffic. They are clogging the road because they are the laziest and most selfish pack of parents in the area. The council had an opportunity to address this last year and they did nothing. We need Midland Park to step in and enforce the law.

Many could benefit from a brisk WALK to Ridge. Try setting an example for the kids.

I just noticed today for the first time that Somerville parents are now parking on Spring Avenue, east and west of South Pleasant, making that street a nightmare to drive on during afternoon dismissal time.
