THE RIDGEWOOD RUN IS CELEBRATING IT’S 45TH RUNNING! JOIN US IN PERSON FOR THE MEMORIAL DAY TRADITION

Ridgewood NJ, the Fred d’Elia Ridgewood Run was created by Manfred (Fred) d’Elia and his wife, world-class runner Toshiko d’Elia, in 1976. Tired of driving his wife into Manhattan for competition with the New York Road Runners, Fred decided to create his own race to attract serious runners to their hometown. The inaugural Ridgewood Run took off with runners sporting hand-made bib numbers with Fred acting as race director, course certifier and timer. “With no money to put on a race, we all had our tasks,” recalls Toshiko d’Elia. “I hand-delivered all the race applications around town to save on stamps and our daughter Erica, was handed a black dry-marker to make race numbers.”

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Emergency Services Volunteers were well prepared for the 44th Annual Ridgewood Memorial Day Run Activities.  “The culmination of all the hours planning that is involved for activities rests with the weather”,stated Acting Chief Ryan Savaria. “If the weather cooperates with near perfect running conditions, our job is much easier on Run Day” added Savaria. As you ran the route, Emergency Services Volunteers and their equipment were stationed strategically to quick response. At the finish line, there was a huge cadre of responders in their safety vests awaiting the runners. A fully staffed Treatment Tent was established and staffed with the volunteer EMTs and Paramedics.  Thanks to all the Ridgewood Volunteers for being well prepared. A large team of mutual aid agencies were on standby at the Run as well to assist. Running: Ridgewood Run notes

THE RECORD

Bank on Brown

For the 40th consecutive year — the entire life of the event — Jacob Brown lent a supporting hand at the Ridgewood Run.

This time it was giving out water and juice to runners not far from the finish line Monday.

He was overseeing quite a few members of his Ridgewood High School girls track team that also were volunteering their services on the refreshment line for the thirsty competitors.

In past years, Brown has done any number of jobs at the race, including patrolling the grounds, picking up trash, using his ever-present camera for photography work — basically whatever assignment that needed to be handled, he did it enthusiastically.

The 69-year-old Brown, who is retiring after 44 seasons as the legendary coach of the Maroons’ track and field squad (and as a health education teacher) was there at the beginning in 1976 when race founder Fred d’Elia turned to him for advice.

“Basically it was all about the logistics of how to put something like this together starting from scratch; I was sort of like an aide-de-camp for Fred,” said Brown.

“He was able to get all the politicians and police and other departments to close the streets off, but he also needed a plan to actually formulate on how and where everything would take place.

“We were very surprised that first year because we thought that less than a hundred people would show up and we got eight or nine times that many entrants.”

Ridgewood firefighter beats Guinness World Record time for running in full gear

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — Temperatures in the mid-70s couldn’t stop him. A recent bout of bronchitis surely didn’t. And forget about those 25 pounds of firefighting gear — including three and a half pounds of boot on each foot.

In the end, Ridgewood Fire Lt. Brendan Corcoran smashed the Guinness World Record he’d been chasing by more than a full minute on Monday. The previous record for the one-mile run wearing full fire gear was 7 minutes 58.02 seconds. Corcoran unofficially clocked in at 6 minutes 45 seconds on his brother Greg’s watch, a fellow firefighter who ran alongside him at the Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run.

You might say Corcoran has been training for this run since age 7, when he ran his first 10-kilometer race in Ridgewood with his Uncle Greg. Since then, he’s competed in marathons, half-marathons, triathlons and Ironman Triathlons — including one half-marathon in March in full firefighter gear that’s soon to become the new world record with 1 hour 48 minutes 24 seconds.

Fast forward to 2001, when he was working as a personal trainer and living in Hoboken. Sept. 11 hit and he realized he wanted to step up for his community.

Anthony Daniels, families hope to find bone marrow match at Ridgewood Run

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Delete Blood Cancer will host a donor drive tent at The Fred D’Elia Ridgewood Run 2015 on May 25 at Veteran’s Memorial Field.

The purpose of the drive is to find bone marrow matches for those suffering from blood diseases, including 23-year-old Ridgewood resident Anthony Daniels, who has Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“Our goal is to find a match for Anthony as well as numerous others fighting the good fight against blood cancers,” said Mayor Paul Aronsohn. “It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s so very important.”

Aronsohn helped organize the tent.

“The idea came to me from a mutual friend of mine, Ridgewood resident Linda Scarpa, and Anthony’s father, Kevin Daniels, who suggested the Memorial Day Ridgewood Run as a venue for another drive,” the mayor said. “I thought the idea was great and immediately contacted Gail Kislevitz, who then reached out to the North Jersey Masters board, which embraced the idea.”

“Our family’s been blessed with such outreach from friends, school mates, acquaintances and strangers,” Kevin said. “The support has been first-rate from our mayor and our new friends at North Jersey Masters.”

Ridgewood Run set for Monday

info_photo_8

The Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run, organized by North Jersey Masters, will take place on Monday, May 25. The race has been taking place in Ridgewood for 39 years and the 40th will have a few changes and special guests.

Founded in 1976 by the late Fred d’Elia and his wife, world-renown marathoner Toshiko, North Jersey Masters is the largest running club in Bergen County and one of the largest running clubs in New Jersey. Many Ridgewood residents belong to the club.

At last year’s race, a memorial was given in honor of Toshiko d’Elia, who passed away last February.

This year, her daughter Erica Diestel of Allendale will once again walk the course with family members and friends of “Toshi.
