Ocean City, NJ, in a groundbreaking study published yesterday, researchers revealed that the voice boxes of baleen whales have developed a unique set of structures for communicating underwater. This discovery solves a mystery that has perplexed scientists for the past 50 years ever since the first recordings of baleen whale songs were made in 1967.

Following decisions of its Board of Directors, Ørsted will cease development of the Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects and has taken final investment decision on the Revolution Wind project. The decisions are part of an ongoing review of Ørsted’s US offshore wind portfolio.
Governor Murphy,
We are writing today to appeal for an immediate moratorium on all offshore wind activity in light of the recent significant increase in whale deaths and the loss of other marine life along the Jersey shore and in our waters. While we understand the need to find alternative energy sources that help reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources, we must be sure that our current practices are safe for the environment and the animals with whom we share our world.

Seaside Park NJ, Stranding Network members from The Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, New York Marine Rescue Center, and Maryland Department of Natural Resources completed a necropsy today, 3/3/2023 in Seaside Park, NJ, to determine the cause of death of the 30ft humpback whale that was first seen on March 1. Although the animal was fairly decomposed, teams were able to determine that she was a female, in good body condition, and document several internal and external injuries. These include bruising on the head, sections of fractured skull, and sharp force trauma consistent with propeller wounds on the right lateral side. Evidence of previous entanglement scars were also documented. The necropsy team obtained samples from the wound sites, as well as other parts of the whale, that will be sent out for further testing to determine if the injuries were sustained pre or post mortem. Full results may not be available for many weeks. Following the necropsy, the whale was buried on the beach. The Seaside Park Police Department, Fire Department, Public Works, NJ State Park Police, Ocean County Sheriff’s Officials, Seaside Heights Officials, NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Law Enforcement and Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office Staff, NJ Department of Environmental Projection, and Monmouth County Department of Public Works were all on scene or assisting with the response. We are thankful for the tireless efforts of our stranding network and local partners, and their dedication towards these animals.

Trenton NJ, Governor Phil Murphy today announced the offshore wind solicitation schedule to meet the 7,500 megawatt (MW) offshore wind goal by 2035 and called upon the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to take all necessary actions to implement the schedule. These projects will deliver the clean, renewable energy generation needed to meet the State’s goals of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030 and a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2050. Reaching 7,500 MW will generate enough electricity to power more than 3.2 million homes and meet fifty percent of the state’s electric power need, while supporting an offshore wind industry that will generate billions of dollars in investments in New Jersey’s future and create thousands of jobs.
