Ocean City NJ, President Biden’s Green New Deal faced a significant setback as developers of a large offshore wind project in New York withdrew from a deal with the state. Approximately 30% of current wind projects are at risk of delays or cancellations. Since July, projects in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut have been put on hold. The withdrawal of BP and Equinox from the New York project adds to the challenges facing offshore wind initiatives. While there may be attempts to revive the projects, this setback contributes to the offshore wind sector’s recent struggles. Notably, two other major projects, Empire Wind 1 and Beacon Wind, are facing financial difficulties, although they haven’t been officially canceled yet. The much-touted “green energy transition” appears to be encountering significant challenges.

Ridgewood NJ, the polar vortex seems to have thrown ice water on Governor Murphy’s promotion of alternative energy .On November 19, 2019 Governor Murphy signed Executive Order #92. This order effectively raised New Jersey’s offshore wind goal from 3,500 megawatts by 2030 to 7,500 megawatts by 2035 – more than double the initial goal. This new goal will deliver clean, renewable energy generation needed to meet the State’s goals of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% clean energy by 2050. A schedule for offshore wind solicitations through 2028 has been developed and can be found here.
Much of the Midwest and mountain states are seeing subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions as the polar vortex sweeps through. As far south as Dallas, the temperatures dipped into the 20s. In parts of Minnesota, temperatures dipped to near their lowest levels in a century. In Texas, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is warning of “rolling blackouts” due to extreme cold.

Trenton NJ, Governor Phil Murphy today announced the offshore wind solicitation schedule to meet the 7,500 megawatt (MW) offshore wind goal by 2035 and called upon the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to take all necessary actions to implement the schedule. These projects will deliver the clean, renewable energy generation needed to meet the State’s goals of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030 and a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2050. Reaching 7,500 MW will generate enough electricity to power more than 3.2 million homes and meet fifty percent of the state’s electric power need, while supporting an offshore wind industry that will generate billions of dollars in investments in New Jersey’s future and create thousands of jobs.

Atlantic City NJ, Illustrating a strong appetite for the Garden State’s expanding offshore wind industry, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) today announced that more than 400 businesses have joined the state’s Offshore Wind Supply Chain Registry since it launched less than five months ago.
The NJEDA, through its Office of Economic Transformation (OET), has been working closely with the Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) and other agencies on the Offshore Wind Task Force to expand New Jersey’s offshore wind industry. A consistent piece of feedback throughout this process has been a desire for a comprehensive list of New Jersey-based companies that established offshore wind companies can partner with or purchase from as they advance projects in the state.
