Trenton NJ, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced commercial vehicle travel restrictions on multiple interstate highways starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 19, in anticipation of a significant winter storm. Accumulations are expected to range between six to ten inches across the state, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions.

The travel restriction applies to both directions on the following interstate highways:

  • I-76 (entire length)
  • I-78 (entire length)
  • I-80 (entire length)
  • I-195 (entire length)
  • I-280 (entire length)
  • I-287 (entire length)
  • I-295 (entire length)
  • I-676 (entire length)
  • NJ Route 440, from the Outerbridge Crossing to I-287

Vehicles Impacted by Restrictions

The restriction applies to the following vehicle types:

  • All tractor trailers (with limited exceptions per the Administrative Order)
  • Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
  • Passenger vehicles pulling trailers
  • Recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • Motorcycles

Exemptions

The restriction does not apply to:

  • The New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway
  • Public safety vehicles and personnel
  • Essential services for healthcare facilities or critical infrastructure, including food and fuel delivery

Important Driving Guidelines

NJDOT urges all motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. If travel is unavoidable, keep these safety tips in mind:

  1. SLOW DOWN and obey speed limits.
  2. STAY CLEAR of plows and salt trucks; do not pass between plows in formation.
  3. ALLOW EXTRA TIME to reach your destination.
  4. MAINTAIN A SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE between vehicles.
  5. Be cautious on bridges and ramps, as they freeze more quickly.
  6. If conditions worsen, PULL OFF SAFELY and wait out the storm.

Prepare for Emergencies

Pack an emergency kit in your car with essentials like:

  • Cell phone charger
  • Water and snacks
  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • First-aid supplies
